| RICHARD HIMBER / STARS FELL ON ALABAMA (5440) |
The enigmatic American violinist and bandleader Richard Himber proved an influential figure in the music of the 30s. Known as "The Suave Stylist of the Dance", he put together bands to entertain the high society clientele of New York's top hotels, such as the Ritz-Carlton or Essex House. In the ranks of his orchestras would be found the likes of Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman, especially when it came to recording work. Stars Fell On Alabama (Living Era's CD) was the biggest of a string of hits, Richard Himber enjoyed during his heyday of 1933-1941. With vocalists Joey Nash and Stuart Allen, he made the equivalent of the 'top ten' with Day After Day, Cling To Me, In The Chapel In The Moonlight, You Hit The Spot, Footloose And Fancy Free, Just One Of Those Things and Tormented (some fine Artie Shaw clarinet here). Singers Libby Holman (You And The Night And The Music) and Mary Martin (Do It Again) are also featured. [Item Code: 55656 CD: $11.00]

Londoner Sid Phillips was the most popular British jazz clarinetist of the '40s & '50s. This compilation offers 26 tempting dishes from Sid's output between 1936 and 1951. It features him with the Ambrose Orchestra, George Shearing, and his Dixieland band at the start of the 1950s. | VICTOR SILVESTER / SLOW, SLOW, QUICK, QUICK, SLOW (5559) |
Whereas the average reader might take "Slow, slow, quick, quick, slow" for a sneering comment on the progress of English county cricket, since the rebirth in popularity of ballroom dancing sparked a broader parallel interest in the art's earlier protaganists, the initiated will recognize it as the catchphrase of the man who for more than 30 years was a doyen of "strict tempo". In a British and Commonwealth context Victor Silvester was a virtual creator of that genre, its most highly influential promoter and in that capacity an eagerly awaited weekly institution of British radio. Yet even those who danced to - or merely tuned in to hear - the sweet strains of You're Dancing On My Heart, might be suprised to learn that the life of this master hoofer revolved around wider circles than the mere dance floor.
