EARL BOSTIC / EARL BOSTIC PLAYS FLAMINGO (5635)
59832
Earl Bostic (1913-1965) has carved a special niche for himself in the annals of great saxophone-players. Always a brilliant technician, from a background of playing in, and arranging for, jazz big-bands such as Lionel Hampton's, he led a group that achieved great success playing Rhythm & Blues. He went on to become a household name when he took popular standards and gave them a hard-driving R&B edge, as with the lilting Latin number he took for his million-selling signature tune, Flamingo. It was Bostic's alto that inspired all those later distinctively honking R&B saxes. The 27 tracks of Earl Bostic plays Flamingo presents a selection of the best of his R&B and then rather more of the best of his versions of standards., for which he is most famous The R&B greats include Eight Forty-Five Stomp, That's The Groovy Thing, Don't You Do It, The Major And The Minor, Earl Blows A Fuse and his big hit version of Sleep. Among the many standards getting the invigorating Bostic treatment is, of course, his other major chart success, Temptation, as well as Cherokee, Moonglow, Lover Come Back To Me, The Man I Love and many more. Even Schubert's Serenade emerges in a bracing new guise! Earl Bostic was an inspiration for several later tenor sax masters who can be heard in his band on this CD, from Don Byas to John Coltrane, Benny Golson and Stanley Turrentine.

DIZZY GILLESPIE / GROOVIN' HIGH (5565)
57894
The style of jazz known as bebop, or just bop, gradually emerged during the late night jam sessions which took place in New York clubs such as Minton's and Monroe's Playhouse during the early 1940s. Using the basic chord structure of standard tunes, young musicians like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gilliespie would develop new themes, play them at furious tempos, in unusual keys, and often give their compositions some esoteric title. Most of the young boopers took their work every seriously with the exception of Gilliespie, who lived to his nickname "Dizzy", and through his exuberance and flair for showmanship helped to bring the new music to a wider audience.

JOHNNY HODGES / THE JEEP IS JUMPIN' (2021)
60930
2-CD Set, Johnny Hodges (1907-1970), known as "Jeep" or "Rabbit", raised the fine art of jazz alto saxophone-playing to an unparalleled level of beauty. His utterly distinctive sound, technique and innate jazz feeling, made his the supreme instrumental voice within the great Duke Ellington band for some 38 years. He did however lead quite a number of sessions away from Ducal confines and from 1951/5 led his own orchestra. To mark his centenary on 25th July this new compilation puts together all his best work recorded under his own leadership during the vintage period of 1941 to 1955. The Jeep Is Jumpin' complements Jeep's Blues (ASV 5180 - 24 tracks 1928-1941) by taking up the Johnny Hodges story in 1941, when he made four great septet tracks with Ellington at the piano (Squatty Roo . . .), and continuing through to 1955. There are six late 40s numbers that include some of the sensuously lovely compositions written for him by Billy Strayhorn (Violet Blue . . .), and four recorded in Paris (Wishing And Waiting . . .), preceding a generous 32 winners from his own orchestra (usually a seven- or eight-piece). The Ellington influence is of course very strong. Not only is he joined by such noted Ellingtonians as Lawrence Brown and Ben Webster, he also plays several of the Duke's standards, such as Sophisticated Lady, Mood Indigo and, above all, the indescribably wonderful I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good. We assure you it is good!

BILLY MAY / A TRIBUTE TO BILLY MAY (5575)
55202
Earlier this year the music world lost one of its most distinguished talents. American composer, arranger, bandleader and trumpeter Billy May (1916-2004) died on 22nd January, prompting this exuberant tribute from Living Era. The generous programme offers a sensational portrait of this giant of popular music, opening with his memorable arrangement for Charlie Barnet of Cherokee. The brilliant Billy May trumpet is heard in the company of other top jazzmen on Clambake In B Flat and Lazy River. After two great Latin tracks with his Rico Mambo Orchestra there are 16 glorious tracks 1951-1953, every one a great arrangement, often with his distinctive "slurping saxophones" to the fore. Billy May was famous for accompanying great song stylists (such as Frank Sinatra, of course), and examples are included here with Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Kay Starr, Nellie Lutcher and Hoagy Carmichael.

JAY McSHANN / HOOTIE'S BLUES (5667)
60613
Hootie's Blues pays tribute to Jay McShann with a wide-ranging portrait of his career during the 40s to mid-50s. Most popular at the time were the swinging blues numbers sung by Walter Brown (Confessin' The Blues, Hootie Blues, The Jumpin' Blues . . .), while jazz historians are most grateful for the early soundings of Charlie Parker (Swingmatism, Sepian Bounce . . .). McShann's own brilliant piano playing is featured on trio tracks Vine Street Boogie, Hold 'Em Hootie etc. He also introduced the great blues shouter, Jimmy Witherspoon, heard here on some real classics ('Tain't Nobody's Business If I Do, I Wanna Little Girl . . .). During the 50s McShann's band was creating jazz milestones with Ben Webster (Reach and The Duke And The Brute) and, in 1955, even topping the R&B charts with Priscilla Bowman's Hands Off. What a band and what a musician!

ANDRE PREVIN / PLAYS MY FAIR LADY (5656)
60472
The Berlin-born American pianist, conductor and composer Andre Previn (b.1929) has enjoyed the most amazing of musical careers. Feted for decades as one of the world's top classical conductors, he was previously at the head of the field in the world of Hollywood musicals - and as a jazz pianist. It is in this last role that he is heard here at his dazzling young best. Andre Previn was still a precocious teenager when he began his recording career as a jazz pianist of the top flight. Living Era's survey of the best of his work from this period has six of these late-40s tracks including Ellington specials (Take The "A" Train . . .) and great standards such as Hallelujah! Then six early 50s tracks, all with trio or quartet, comprise Harry Warren evergreens (September In The Rain . . .), terrific Fats Waller numbers (Honeysuckle Rose . . .) and a Who's Sorry Now? with strings. These all did well but were far outstripped by his phenomenal 1956 success alongside drummer Shelly Manne. There was a new hit show on Broadway and Previn took the unusual step of recording a whole LP of jazz versions of the songs. This was of course My Fair Lady, and the record by Shelly Manne & his Friends achieved the biggest sales ever for a jazz LP at that time. All eight of these scintillating interpretations, sounding as fresh now as when they were recorded, are included here.

DJANGO REINHARDT / DJANGOLOGY (2016)
60480
2-CD set. The two personalities could hardly be more different: Reinhardt the swarthy gypsy with a maddening disregard of the city-dweller's idea of time; Grappelli the urbane, debonair, classically-trained musician. But it was in partnership with Django Reinhardt that the most potent musical magic was conjured, and this double CD holds its essence.

CLAUDE THORNHILL / SNOWFALL (5542)
55654
American bandleader, pianist, arranger and composer Claude Thornhill (1909-1965) was one of the most talented and sought-after musicians of his era. After playing with such as Whiteman, Goodman and Miller, the band he formed in 1939 was regarded as one of the most distinctive around. Snowfall (Claude Thornhill's signature tune; almost a miniature tone-poem) is Living Era's survey of his great years. As well as Thornhill's own striking compositions (such as the extraordinary Portrait Of A Guinea Farm) and arrangements (Autumn Nocturne . . .), the band gained a high reputation through the imaginative arrangements of Gil Evans (Anthropology, Donna Lee, Robbin's Nest . . .). A popular Thornhill speciality was Œjazzing the classics', like Arab Dance or Träumerei. He also featured notable vocalists in Maxine Sullivan (Loch Lomond) and Fran Warren (A Sunday Kind Of Love).

LU WATTERS / GOOD TIME MUSIC, SAN FRANCISCO STYLE (5550)
56884
Californian trumpeter Lu Watters (1911-1990) blew the lustiest and earliest notes of the 40s white "Trad Jazz" revival. He was an enormously influential bandleader; the stamp of historical authenticity set his famous Yerba Buena Jazz Band apart and stimulated the large-scale revival of interest in New Orleans jazz, leading to a phenomenally successful career as America's first real revivalist band. The band's raucously jovial and earthy style became known as "good time music". Living Era's Good Time Music, San Francisco Style presents the 25 best from the Yerba Buena's great series of 40s recordings. Many are jazz standards that are still the bread-and-butter of all the 100s of Trad bands still playing: Muskrat Ramble, Maple Leaf Rag, High Society, Milenberg Joys, Tiger Rag and so on. There are three fine Lu Watters originals: Big Bear Stomp, Antigua Blues and Emperor Norton's Hunch, and the sequence ends with a couple of breezy vocals from banjoist Clancy Hayes. All the familiar Yerba Buena stalwarts are here, including Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey, Wally Rose, Ellis Horne and Bob Helm.
