EDDIE CALVERT / SONG OF THE GOLDEN TRUMPET (5630)
59830
Lancastrian Eddie Calvert (1922-1978) stepped out from the ranks of the Billy Ternent and Geraldo bands of the 40s to become 'The Man With The Golden Trumpet', a hugely successful recording phenomenon, providing one of the distinctive sounds of the 50s. The Song Of The Golden Trumpet (written for Calvert) gives the title to Living Era's generous programme of 28 of Eddie Calvert's finest recordings from 1951 to 1955. All five of his chart hits of the period are here. Not once but twice he hit the jackpot with huge selling Number Ones; firstly with O mein Papa, then Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White (with which he traded the top spot with Perez Prado). He thus became the first British instrumentalist to top the chart twice, and the first to earn a Gold Disc. The other hits are the film theme John And Julie, Stranger In Paradise and the lively Zambesi. But there are 23 more fine selections to receive the unmistakeable Eddie Calvert treatment including such favourites as Love Is A Many-Splendoured Thing, My Son My Son, Roses Of Picardy, Tenderly, Some Enchanted Evening and (perhaps as a follow-up to 'Papa') O My Beloved Daddy.

JOE DANIELS / DIXIE BAND STOMP (5652)
60479
The South African-born drummer Joe Daniels (1909-1993) gained great popularity through the showmanship he always displayed in fronting his Hot Shots, but in the early 50s he formed a Jazz Group with the object of presenting Dixieland jazz, pure and simple - and seldom has it ever sounded more joyful and exuberant! Thanks to access to rare 78s owned by original band member, guitarist Nevil Skrimshire, and others, Living Era has been able to produce this vibrant Joe Daniels Jazz Group collection - a major CD first of British jazz. Joe Daniels was the catalyst for bringing together many of the finest traditional players on the scene, and such stalwarts as Alan Wickham, Harry Brown, Norman Long, Geoff Sowden, Dave Shepherd, Tony Coe, Vic Ash and the late, great Don Lusher can all be heard in fine form. 28 lively numbers. Digby Fairweather's note incorporates personal reminiscences from no fewer than three of the original musicians (Skrimshire, Wickham and Shepherd)!

MAYNARD FERGUSON / WOW! THE FORMATIVE YEARS (5659)
60265
He was one of the most naturally talented brass players in jazz history, a virtuoso jazz trumpeter who, both as soloist and bandleader, wowed audiences with his flamboyant technique, famous for its soaring upper register, power and endurance. As The Times obituary said: "His extraordinary technique allowed him not only to hit the highest notes in his instrument's range with frequency and accuracy, but to play at that level with great speed and perfect articulation". Wow! (with a vocal by Mrs. Maynard Ferguson, Kay Brown) sums up the typical response to Ferguson's playing, and provides the title for Living Era's summary of his early career. He was a star from the moment he played as soloist with Jimmy Dorsey in 1949 (Diz Duz Everything - two rare broadcast tracks), then Charlie Barnet (All The Things You Are), then, famously, with Stan Kenton (Maynard Ferguson, The Hot Canary . . .). There are a dozen sizzling tracks with his own orchestra or octet, plus one as "Tiger Brown" with Ben Webster (King's Riff). In 1956 he created a sensation with a jazz group called The Birdland Dreamband, and five superb tracks bring the sequence to a thrilling conclusion.

He selected to play many timeless popular standards and invested them all with his own special magic: "Autumn Leaves," "Gone With The Wind," "Imagination," "My Old Flame," "These Foolish Things" and many others. HUMPHREY LYTTELTON / SNAG IT! (5462)
49626
Humphrey Lyttleton, affectionately known as "Humph," is a British institution. Not only is he known as perhaps the finest jazz trumpeter Britain has ever produced, but he is also a fervent advocate for jazz as an author and as the most respected voice regularly presenting jazz on the radio. One of the leaders of England's revivalist movement of the late '40s, Lyttelton's music gradually evolved into small-group swing and he has alternated between the two idioms throughout his productive career. After serving in the military, Lyttelton played with George Webb's Dixielanders in 1947 and formed his own group the following year.

KEN MacKINTOSH / HIS SAXOPHONE AND ORCHESTRA (5640)
59390
When Ken Mackintosh (1919-2005) died last November at the age 86, Britain lost one of its very finest band-leading musicians of the postwar era. Through long-term residences of the Leicester Square Empire and Hammersmith Palais, through tours, radio series and the regular release of first-rate records, the Ken Mackintosh Orchestra was a permanent and extremely popular fixture of the music scene, satisfyingly complementing in style the bands of such as Ted Heath. His own, near flawless saxophone playing often brought to mind comparisons with Freddy Gardner. Living Era pays tribute with a hugely enjoyable sequence of 27 of the finest of the 'Ken Mackintosh, His Saxophone & Orchestra' record series, opening with his Top Ten smash The Creep. Many tracks feature his eloquent saxophone playing, such as It Ainšt Necessarily So, Harlem Nocturne, Black Velvet, Lovers In The Dark, Off Shore and the closing Misty. Interspersing the 20 instrumental tracks are seven vocals with singers including his trombonist Gordon Langthorn (later 'Don Lang') (Tootle-Loo-Siana). One novelty item even features Beryl Reid in character as the Brummie 'Marlene' (Tin Pan Alley Ball).

GERRY MULLIGAN / JERU (5612)
57814
Twenty-seven tunes showcase Gerry Mulligan's quartet beginning in 1952 with recordings from Phil Turetsky's home in Laurel Canyon (Los Angeles). The resulting sides, Bernie's Tune and Lullaby Of The Leaves marked the beginning of the Pacific Jazz label. Following the May 20, 1953 session that closes this CD Mulligan fell foul of the local drug laws and sent to jail for 90 days. Upon his release he found the quartet had gone its various ways and one of the most popular small bands of the decade was no more.
