BILLY COTTON / WAKEY WAKEY (5557)
57128
One of the longest serving of all British bandleaders, his shows were not only enjoyable for the breezy comedy, but also for the fact that he led a first-rate band full of good musicians. In 1962 he was voted Show business Personality Of the Year. Living Era's Wakey Wakey! offers a generous portion of the best of the typical material of a Billy Cotton Band Show. There are many amusing novelty items and a range of first-rate songs with top vocalists such as Cyril Grantham, Sam Browne and, a band stalwart since 1931, Alan Breeze.

GLEN GRAY / SMOKE RINGS (5382)
36689
When the Toronto roadhouse "The Casa Loma" was set to open in 1927, a band was hired. The hotel never opened, but the orchestra, an offshoot of the Jean Goldkette Band, more than survived. The Casa Loma Orchestra became the envy of all other big bands & paved the way for the swing era. Alto saxophonist Glen Gray eventually fronted the band, and from 1931-45, they notched up 64 hits. This collection features "Heaven Can Wait," "Blue Moon," "Smoke Rings" & others.

ART KASSEL / MUSIC, MAESTRO, PLEASE (5594)
58168
This is the most worthwhile CD representation yet issued of the enjoyable music of 'sweet' bandleader Art Kassel. Chicago-born Art Kassel (1896-1965) was one of the favourites among the great American 'sweet' bands of the 30s and 40s, alongside such as Guy Lombardo and Jan Garber. The tenor sax-playing composer and leader of the 'Kassels-in-the-Air' enjoyed a string of chart successes, and still has quite a following. Music, Maestro, Please, the title of Living Era compilation's, was the biggest of nine chart hits contained in a 'sweet' sequence of 26 tracks covering the best of the band's output. Other Top Tens were Kassel's own Hell's Bells, Moon Song and The One Rose. The whole programme evokes the nostalgic spirit of 30s and 40s music. Despite his earlier popularity, Art Kassel is barely represented in the current catalog.

DEBROY SOMERS / NIGHT TIME BRINGS DREAMS OF YOU (5616)
59022
Debroy Somers can play every instrument in an orchestra or military band. He is an absolute master of seven: the aboe, cor anglais, piano, harp, clarinet, saxophone, and xylophone - no wonder he is such a famous bandleader, composer and arranger. He made some of the first symphonic dance arrangements in this country, and arranged and rehearsed what was probably the first stage appearance of a dance band in England - Bert Ralton and the Savoy Havana Band. He was also one of the first to broadcast, being the originator of the Savoy Orpheans.
