LARRY CLINTON / MY REVERIE (5629)
59511
Larry Clinton - Multi-Instrumentalist. Brooklyn-born musician Larry Clinton (1909-1987) was a skilled arranger, highly original composer-lyricist, competent multi-instrumentalist and qualified bandleader. If not placed quite up there with Miller, Goodman and Dorsey, his band was nevertheless one of the most successful of the late 30s Swing Era, enjoying 38 record hits. He could certainly play both sweet and hot. And he was blessed with one of the very best band singers in Bea Wain (voted by Billboard No.1 Female Band Vocalist of 1939). Living Era's My Reverie takes its title from Larry Clinton's hit, the biggest of no fewer than 18 included. Four were Number Ones, the other three being Deep Purple, Cry Baby Cry and Heart And Soul. Other Top Threes are Martha, You Go To My Head, True Confession and Summer Souvenirs. All these have in common the stylish vocals of Bea Wain - the programme has 14 by her. Trombonist Ford Leary gives three lively vocals, and there's one from Dick Todd (Change Partners). The Clinton band was noted for 'jazzing the classics' (My Reverie comes from Debussy, and a further sampling is a lively In A Persian Market) and for an imposing series of instrumental tone poems, Studies- in Brown, Blue, Green, Red and Scarlet - all five featured here, with such fine jazzers as Skeets Herfurt, Toots Mondello, Babe Russin and the great lead-trumpeter Charlie Spivak.

RUSS MORGAN / CRUISIN' DOWN THE RIVER (5354)
33287
Russ Morgan, American bandleader, trombonist, singer & composer, directed one of the most successful of all the "sweet" Guy Lombardo-style bands of the 1930s & 1940s. Flavored by his distinctively muted "wah-wah" trombone, his many recordings sold in vast numbers. This 28 track compilation includes all his major hits, such as the chart-topping "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down," "I've Got A Pocketful Of Dreams," "Forever & Ever," the hit title track & others.

TONY PASTOR / MR. PASTOR GOES TO TOWN (5683)
61351
Living Era's Mr. Pastor Goes To Town gives a hugely enjoyable overview of a fine career. The opening six tracks stem from his late 30s years as vocalist and sax-player with Artie Shaw, with big hits such as Indian Love Call and When Winter Comes. Leading his own band from 1940 he achieved great popularity, and the 20 tracks include eight big chart hits; happy numbers like Bell-Bottom Trousers and Dance With A Dolly With A Hole In Her Stocking. There are fine jazz instrumentals too, such as Flagwaver, Just For Kicks or Copley Square.

ALVINO REY / KING OF THE GUITAR (5581)
55992
Alvino Rey was one of the most influential masters of the guitar, specialising in the Hawaiian steel guitar and actually transforming the instrument itself. His 40s band scored a dozen chart hits, seven in the Top Ten. Living Era pays tribute to Alvino Rey ³King Of The Guitar², with a generous 26-track programme that gives an unrivalled survey of this multi-talented artistıs career. His biggest hits are here: Deep In The Heart Of Texas (No.1), I Said No! (No.2), Idaho (No.3), Near You (No.3), Cement Mixer (No.5) and so on. The featured vocalists include the popular King Sisters, one of whom, Luise, became Reyıs wife. His dazzling guitar artistry is prominent throughout, especially in solos such as Two Guitar, El Relicario, The Third Man Theme and Steel Guitar Rag.
