FRANK CHACKSFIELD / IN THE LIMELIGHT (5655)
60607
Among the most successful conductors of light orchestral music, Sussex-born Frank Chacksfield (1914-1995) is probably second-only to Mantovani in his enduring popularity. It is estimated that he sold over 20 million LPs, but he earlier achieved an extraordinary peak of success during the early and mid 50s when he created all the easy-listening classics featured in this immaculately-performed Living Era program. Frank Chacksfield first became internationally famous in 1953 when he formed a 40-piece orchestra with a large string section. His very first 78 recorded for Decca Charlie Chaplin's Limelight theme - won him a Gold Disc through its big success in the USA. In Britain it earned him the NME Record of the Year award. His second 78 Ebb Tide became the first-ever British non-vocal disc to reach No. 1 in the American charts, providing a second Gold Disc. No fewer than 28 other light music gems, demonstrating Chacksfield's huge range, join these two monster smashes in a sequence that cannot fail to delight all those listeners who relish skilfully-crafted, easy-on-the-ear charm.

JAN GARBER / A MELODY FROM THE SKY (5326)
51666
American bandleader and violinest Jan Garber made a huge impact on the popular music of the 1930s. This CD opens with the two biggest hits of his earlier "hot" band -- "I Want To Be Happy" and "Baby Face." The rest of the 21 tracks are his luscious "sweet" successes from 1933-39, nearly all of them big hits. Features vocalist Lee Bennett and trombonist Russ Brown.

ANDRE KOSTELANETZ / THE KOSTELANETZ TOUCH (5422)

Andre Kostelanetz arranged classical pieces as easy-listening numbers, bringing the music to a broad, middle-brow audience that wouldn't normally have listened to the music. In the process, he inadvertantly invented easy listening music. Kostelanetz grasped the power of radio and he adapted his arrangements to fit the conventions of mass communications. This CD includes "Blues In The Night," "Dancing In The Dark," "Fascinatin' Rhythm," "S'Wonderful" & others.

CHARLIE KUNZ / CLAP HANDS, HERE COMES... (5425)
37041
American pianist and bandleader Charlie Kunz acheived fame when he came to England. His gentle, syncopated stride piano, with rich full chording and discreet rhythm accompaniment, and trademark "loud-soft" contrasts, was a distinctive feature of the 30s music scne in Britain. Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie was a natural signature tune, and it opens Living Era's genial portrait of Charlie Kun as both pianist and bandleader

DAVID ROSE / HOLIDAY FOR STRINGS (5499)
55529
London-born (but American raised) David Rose (1915-1990) has a special niche in music history. Conductor, composer, arranger, his many film scores were among the most accomplished of the 40s and 50s, and he was also much admired for his characteristic light pieces. Holiday For Strings was David Rose' great million seller of the 40s, and it spearheads Living Era's hugely enjoyable concert of his work. 11 tracks feature his own delightful compositions, such as Dance Of The Spanish Onion, Our Waltz, One Love and Manhattan Square Dance, while the remaining 14 all benefit from his stylish arrangements. Woody Herman's saxophone solos in a highly sensuous Harlem Nocturne

ETHEL SMITH / TICO TICO (5506)
55657
America's Ethel Goldsmith gave up the Gold to became the queen of the Hammond organ. She was the first to gain popular fame as an organist, and her lively nightclub act was popular for many years when, to her already spicy organ playing, she added dancing, singing and comedy routines. Always attired in flamboyantly coloured dresses and outlandish hats, she was a striking figure indeed. Everyone knows Ethel Smith's million-selling theme tune Tico Tico (which provides the title for Living Era's compilation), but here a host of other great numbers receive the scintillating Ethel Smith touch: Liza, La Bamba De Vera Cruz, Mambo Jambo, The Breeze And I, Poinciana, Delicado and many more.
