MILDRED BAILEY / ROCKIN' CHAIR LADY (2020)
60239
2-CD Set. Washingtonian Mildred Rinker (1907-1951) took her first married name to become, as 'Mildred Bailey', the first truly great white jazz singer. In every way she was a big star; she was built on a huge scale, and she outsold all other jazz ladies of the 30s apart from Billie Holiday. Seemingly ill-equipped for her role, she had a small, fragile, unusually high-pitched voice of limited range - yet she possessed an innate ability to swing and her sweet-toned, caressing treatment of ballads and smoky, knowing style with the blues had few peers. When she remarried in 1933, to the diminutive vibes-player Red Norvo, the ill-matched couple were 'Mr. & Mrs. Swing'. Mildred Bailey was known as 'The Rockin' Chair Lady' after her great success with Hoagy's Carmichael's classic, and that provides the title for Living Era's centenary tribute. Here are quite simply the 50 finest recordings she made, spanning from her first-ever disc in 1929 (What Kind O' Man Is You?), through her golden years of the 30s to her full 1947 version of one of her key songs All Of Me. She always worked with the top jazzmen and the list of accompanying musicians reads like a who's who of the giants of jazz: Johnny Hodges, Coleman Hawkins, Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman and, of course, Red Norvo.

VAUGHN DE LEATH / UKULELE LADY (5468)
59385
Vaughn De Leath (1894-1943, born Leonore Vonderleath in Illinois) was the first woman singer to gain fame through the radio, for which reason she came to be called 'the original radio girl'. She performed over 15,000 songs on 2,000 broadcasts throughout the 20s. Hers was a haunting, soft, crooning style, a manner of performance she can be said to have originated, but which was later exploited by male singers such as Bing Crosby and Russ Columbo. Also a major record star, she had 13 hits under her own name and others as vocalist (often under a pseudonym) with various top bands such as Paul Whiteman or Ben Selvin. Sadly, she died an impoverished alcoholic aged 48. Ukulele Lady, Living Era's title, is the song forever associated with Vaughn De Leath. It was strongly featured in the Michael Caine film The Cider House Rules. But a dozen of her other hits are here, including the original version of Are You Lonesome Tonight? Among many more huge successes included are I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Button Up Your Overcoat, I Wanna Be Loved By You and I'm Just Wild About Harry, together with 'chart' versions of such standards as Blue Skies, The Man I Love or Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man. And she reveals a wicked sense of humour in gems like Banana Oil.

MARLENE DIETRICH / FALLING IN LOVE AGAIN (5537)
54953
German singer-actress Maria Magdalena von Losch (1901-1992) became one of the all-time great movie stars as Marlene Dietrich a legend of glamour. The image of her in dark tights in Blue Angel remains an enduring icon of the silver screen. Living Erašs Falling In Love Again presents a seductively husky aural portrait of the superstar with 25 of her best recordings made during her heyday (although her career as a cabaret singer continued another 25 years). The famous title track (sung here in both German and English versions) is one of seven songs featured in Marlene Dietrichšs many films such as Destry Rides Again (The Boys In The Back Room . . .), Morocco, Seven Sinners and A Foreign Affair. The cosmopolitan Marlene sings 13 songs in German, 11 in English (including Lili Marlene) and one in French (Symphonie). Particularly intriguing is a 1951 set of German versions of seven popular standards (The Surrey With The Fringe On Top, Miss Otis Regrets . . .), while in 1952 she made the charts duetting with Rosemary Clooney (Too Old To Cut The Mustard).

MARION HARRIS / LOOK FOR THE SILVER LINING (5330)
58717
During the period coverd by this collection, Marion was one of the most popular recording stars in America, with four songs that went to number one on the charts and 23 making it into the Top Ten. Harris has a warm, pleasant tone that falls pleasingly on the ear and doesn't make any undue demands on the listener. Her way with a lyric is light and deft, meeting the requirements of the material. If it's cheerful, then so is she, but if heartbreak is on the agenda, she delivers the requisite pain.

HELEN KANE / BOOP-BOOP-A-DOOP (5336)
55176
Living Era celebrates with the first-ever complete set of all 22 recordings she made for Victor between 1928 and 1930. Her Bronx accented little girl voice uniquely recreates the 'flapper' atmosphere of the 20s in hits such as Button Up Your Overcoat or That's My Weakness Now. But therešs more! Helen returned to the studios fully 20 years later, still Boop-Boop-A-Doop-ing. Five of these are included, among them a 1950 remake with Andre Previn, no less, of I Wanna Be Loved By You.

JESSE MATTHEWS / OVER MY SHOULDER (5663)
60473
Londoner Jessie Matthews (1907-1981) was the biggest star of the West End and of British film musicals during the 30s, when she was known for her graceful dancing and engagingly tremulous singing. She was the epitome of the English musical comedy heroine: delicate build and translucent beauty. Hers was a wide-eyed, innocent, yet captivating character that won a nation's hearts. No other British musical star's films were popular on both sides of the Atlantic. In the 60s she won new acclaim as Mrs. Dale in the long-running Mrs. Dale's Diary. Over My Shoulder (her theme song and title of her autobiography) is Living Era's centenary tribute to Jessie Matthews. It follows her biggest successes on stage and screen, starting with the Rodgers & Hart classic she 'created' in 1927, My Heart Stood Still. In a long series of hit productions she is forever remembered as 'Harriet Green' in the stage Ever Green and film Evergreen, featuring not only Over My Shoulder, but also Dancing On The Ceiling and When You've Got A Little Springtime In Your Heart. Other successes followed such as It's Late Again and Head Over Heels, culminating in the 1942 show Wild Roses in which she starred as 'Sally' singing Look For The Silver Lining

SOPHIE TUCKER / THE LAST OF THE RED HOT MAMAS (5611)
59393
Russian-born Sonia Kalish-Abuza (1884-1966) was, as "Sophie Tucker", one of American vaudeville's greatest stars. With her brassy, flamboyant image and vocal style she had charisma in abundance. Robust, raucous, dynamic, and of generous proportions, it was said of her that "She hurls her songs like projectiles in a very explosive manner". She was "A battleship with a voice like 70 trombones". Living Era's The Last Of The Red Hot Mamas (as she was known) presents a matchless survey of Sophie Tuckeršs most famous recordings, opening with the million-seller she made with Ted Lewis in 1926, Some Of These Days. Her four biggest pre-electric hits are included (You've Got To See Mama Every Night . . .), as is the great quartet of 1927 tracks backed by Miff Mole & his Molers (After You've Gone . . .). In all there are 14 chart hits (There'll Be Some Changes Made, The Lady Is A Tramp . . .) including another million-seller in her heartfelt My Yiddishe Momme. She was the mistress of the double entendre (just listen to He Hadn't Up 'Til Yesterday), and she provided the theme for a mature generation in Life Begins At Forty. In every sense, a great star! Theatregoers have been given a recent reminder of the Sophie Tucker legend through the recent successful show based on her colourful life story.
