| KATHRYN GRAYSON / MY HEART SINGS FOR YOU (5641) |
My Heart Sings For You presents a portrait of Kathryn Grayson's career. From her 1941 debut in Andy Hardy's Private Secretary (with a spectacular Voices Of Spring), through her big 1945 breakthrough in Anchors Aweigh (All Of A Sudden My Heart Sings . . . ) to her series of triumphs as the leading lady in a series of Hollywood's greatest hit musicals: Show Boat (Make Believe . . .), The Desert Song (Romance . . .), Kiss Me, Kate (So In Love . . .) and others. Grayson is notably joined in duet by such top stars as Howard Keel, Tony Martin, and even Frank Sinatra - together, remarkably, in Mozart's La ci darem la mano! | BETTY HUTTON / THE BLONDE BOMBSHELL (5624) |
Michigan gal Elizabeth June Thornburg (b.1921), otherwise 'Betty Hutton', was the archetypal Blonde Bombshell, a brash, energetic star overflowing with zest, gusto and fizzing vitality. After featured roles in several Broadway revues she was signed by Paramount for a long string of successful movies for the decade from 1942, the most famous being Annie, Get Your Gun. She also enjoyed considerable record success with 11 chart hits. (N.B. Her sister was Glenn Miller singer Marion Hutton). Blonde Bombshell is the most persuasive aural demonstration of the Betty Hutton pizzazz yet issued. It traces her film career from the 1942 The Fleet's In (Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing In A Hurry) through such as Incendiary Blonde and The Perils Of Pauline to her triumphant 1950 Annie, Get Your Gun - here are the five top numbers (Doin' What Comes Natur'lly, You Can't Get A Man With A Gun, I Got The Sun In The Morning, and the two duets with Howard Keel, They Say It's Wonderful and Anything You Can Do). Betty's big record hits, all of them here, include Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief (No.1), Stuff Like That There (No.4), It Had To Be You (No.5), I Wish I Didn't Love You So (No.5), His Rocking Horse Ran Away (No.7), and one of two fun duets with Perry Como (A Bushel And A Peck, No.3). She also sings the original of It's Oh So Quiet!, revived recently by Bjork. [Item Code: 59387 CD: $11.00] |
| KITTY KALLEN / LITTLE THINGS MEAN A LOT (5613) |
In a career spanning a quarter of a century Kitty Kallen had numerous hits to her credit, albeit most now forgotten. The career itself, which ranged from big-band through post-war bebop to pop and rock, was marked by periods of inactivity followed by some remarkable comebacks. In 1954 her first million-seller Little Things Mean A Lot made her a star club attraction overnight. Voted most popular record of the year, this more-than-double million-selling, nine week US No.1 spent almost seven months in the US charts; it also topped the British charts for on week and earned Kitty top billing in 1945's Billboard and Variety pools. Living Era's My Heart Belongs To Daddy follows her stage and screen career with 26 memorable renderings of (mostly) musical comedy classics, although she does a near-operatic Il Bacio with Woody Herman. In that one year she starred in Cole Porter's "Leave It To Me" and sang My Heart Belongs To Daddy, her theme song. "My Heart Belongs To Daddy" follows her stage and screen career through 26 memorable renderings of musical comedy classics. [Item Code: 55175 CD: $11.00] |

| ELLA MAE MORSE / COW COW BOOGIE (5514) |
One of the most talented, yet strangely overlooked vocalists of the '40s, Texan Ella Mae Morse (1924-1999) blended jazz, country, pop, and R&B; at times she came remarkably close to what would be known as rock & roll. It is said that Elvis praised her for Œteaching him how to sing. After singing with Jimmy Dorsey she became a star attraction with the Freddie Slack orchestra, before going on to solo success. Cow Cow Boogie was the 17 year-old Ella Mae Morse's first million seller (it was also the very first for Capitol Records), and provides the title for Living Era's exhilarating concert of Ella Mae Morse¹s finest. Eight tracks are fronting the Freddie Slack band, including the No.1 R&B hit Mister Five By Five (with Johnny Mercer). In all there are 14 hits, most notably her other million seller The Blacksmith Blues. Her Shoo Shoo Baby was another to top the R&B charts. A top quality performer, she attracted the likes of Billy May and Nelson Riddle to provide top quality accompaniments.

| DINAH SHORE / RADIO STARS OF AMERICA (5597) |
Here is the sixth of Living Era's series devoted to the biggest stars from America¹s golden age of radio entertainment, continuing with Dinah Shore. Dinah Shore was one of the best-loved of American songstresses of the 40s and 50s. A sultry balladeer in the tradition of Ethel Waters and Mildred Bailey, Dinah had the special ability of making the listener feel she was singing just for him. Her engaging personality shone through intimate, unforced interpretations of standards, leading to 80 hit records between 1940 and 1957, and 10 Emmy Awards. But it was radio that was most responsible for making Shore a star; it was the perfect medium for her vocal talents and charisma. Living Era¹s new CD offers six extended excerpts her radio shows between 1942 and 1947, with Dinah Shore both singing and engaging in playful banter with other 'greats' of US entertainment, Frank Sinatra, Orson Welles and Groucho Marx. | KAY STARR / WHEEL OF FORTUNE (5463) |

This collection features guest artists Coleman Hawkins, Nat King Cole, Charlie Barnet and others. This CD contains songs that became country standards, including "Wabash Cannonball" with Merle Travis as well as duets with Tennessee Ernie Ford. [Item Code: 38362 CD: $11.00] |
| SARAH VAUGHAN / THE DIVINE ONE (5423) |
Here are 26 classic recordings Sarah Vaughan made from 1946-50, starting with her unique collaborations with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker & Flip Phillips. She continued to work with many of finest jazzmen, including Teddy Wilson, Buck Clayton & Charlie Ventura. At the same time, she recorded superb renditions in non-jazz settings, including the all-vocal "Nature Boy". There are 4 tracks from the famous George Treadwell sessions in May 1950 when Sassy's backing group featured the young Miles Davis. [Item Code: 36686 CD: $11.00] |
| DINAH WASHINGTON / QUEEN OF THE BLUES (5534) |
Alabama-born Ruth Lee Jones (1924-1963) became, as ³Dinah Washington², ³the most influential female singer of the last 40 years² (Jazz, The Rough Guide). With her utterly individual style she was hugely successful in the R&B field and, usually with a relaxed jazz backing, also gave many memorable interpretations of popular standards. Sadly her turbulent lifestyle brought her to a premature death. Dinah Washington was known as the Queen Of The Blues, which provides the title for a Living Era programme that contains the very best of her recordings up to 1952. Opening with the three memorable blues she made with Lionel Hampton in 1943 and 1945 (Evil Gal, Salty Papa and Blow-Top Blues), there are no fewer than 16 R&B Top Ten hits (Am I Asking Too Much?, Baby Get Lost, It¹s Too Soon To Know etc.). She also gives inimitable versions of such great songs as If I Loved You, Just One More Chance or Stormy Weather, and even Noel Coward¹s Mad About The Boy, a hit in the UK.
