MACHITO / RELAX & MAMBO (5602)
60240
Frank Raul Grillo (1912-1984) was born in Florida but raised in Cuba and, as the maracas-playing 'Machito', did as much as anyone to create the mambo style. He formed a band in 1941 along with his trumpet-playing brother-in-law Mario Bauza, and for four decades was, alongside Perez Prado and Xavier Cugat, the top international name in Latin-American music. Relax & Mambo offers the very best of Machito. After a trio of early band tracks we have, from 1948/9, his first historic sessions when the Afro-Cubans were joined by top sax-players Charlie Parker and Flip Phillips (No Noise, Tanga . . .). A further quartet of Latin delights, featuring the cheeky vocals of Graciela, precedes the programme's centrepiece: all 17:12 of Chico O'Farrill's thrilling Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite, which has not only Parker and Phillips, but Sweets Edison, Buddy Rich and others. Four more exuberant Latin offerings from the 50s, including George Shearing's Consternacion, complete the whole vibrant extravaganza.

In all, there are seven different nationalities represented, including of course Argentina (Francesco Canaro). Among the better-known European ensembles are those of Geraldo, Victor Silvester, Daj˘s B‚la and Marek Weber. A rarity is the singing of La Cumparsita by opera star Tito Schipa.

CHARLES TRENET / DOUCE FRANCE (288)
59395
2-CD set. The ever-flamboyant Charles Trenet (1913-2001), known fondly as "Le fou chantant" (The Singing Fool), was singer, songwriter, actor and writer of six novels. He was, along with Chevalier and Piaf, the most celebrated French vocalist of the 20th century. After working pre war with Johnny Hess as the duo Charles et Johnny, he gained huge international success in his lengthy solo career. His poems made natural lyrics, and he wrote more than 500 songs, displaying a gift for melody and instinct for rhythmic emphasis that made him a composer of great imagination and vitality. He possessed a light baritone voice of individual, caressing softness, and impeccable diction together with a mastery of microphone technique. Above all, he had charm. Douce France (an alternative national anthem) collates 52 of Trenet's most characteristic numbers, nearly all of them his own compositions. Included are such key songs as his celebrated theme song La Mer, Boum!, Mes jeunes annees, which was sung at his funeral, Bonsoir Jolie Madame, and Que Reste-T-Il De Nos Amours? (I wish you love). The sequence also includes such fascinating items as a 1935 duet with partner Johnny Hess (Rendez-vous sous la pluie), and a 1941 story of La cigale et la fourmi (The Cicada and the Ant) on which he is accompanied by Django Reinhardt. All the songs reflect his unerring ability to touch the emotions, be they happy (Ah! dis ah! dis ah! bonjour) or sad (Seul depuis toujours).
