TONY BENNETT / TAKE MY HAND (5512)
55990
Take My Hand . . . (the opening words of his huge hit Stranger In Paradise) is Living Era¹s survey of the early years of Tony Bennett¹s phenomenal career, from April 1950 (Boulevard Of Broken Dreams), through his two gigantic million sellers just a year later Because Of You and Hank Williams¹ Cold, Cold Heart - to his big hits of 1953 that included other million sellers, Rags To Riches and, of course, Stranger In Paradise (from that year¹s hit musical Kismet). In all there are 15 chart hits, alongside many other fine numbers such as the Traviata-inspired Since My Love Has Gone. STEVE CONWAY / MY FOOLISH HEART (5494)
54956
Bethnal Green-born Walter ³Jimmy² Groom (1920-1952) was one of the finest and most distinctive popular vocalists England ever produced, and it was a tragedy that, after building a fine career under the stage name of ³Steve Conway², he died at the age of just 31. Steve always sang softly and sincerely and, like Al Bowlly, always meant what he sang. His mellow voice had a wonderful and effortless range; smooth yet thrilling, it was warm, rich and relaxed with perfect pitch and depth. All the unique qualities of Steve Conway¹s vocal artistry are demonstrated in Living Era¹s collection of his 24 finest recordings, headed by his most famous hit My Foolish Heart. Every track is a charmer from his theme song I Poured My Heart Out Into A Song through to the closing number At The End Of The Day (which always ended Radio Luxembourg¹s transmissions), on which he was joined by the Hastings Girls Choir. Steve Conway¹s smooth renditions of such evergreens as When We Were Sweet Sixteen, Autumn Leaves, Too Young bear comparison with any of popular music¹s great vocal interpreters.

SAMMY DAVIS JR. / SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE (5646)
60178
Harlem-born Sammy Davis Jr. (1925-1990) truly was 'Mr. Entertainment'. Mimic, dancer, multi-instrumentalist and declamatory singer, he was a dynamic and versatile all-round trouper in the old-fashioned tradition. On stage almost from birth he joined his father and uncle in the Will Mastin Trio before going solo in 1949. He lost his left eye in a 1954 car accident, yet that year made his great breakthrough as a singer with the No.1 album "Starring Sammy Davis Jr." He was one of the first popular American black performers to be acceptable to both black and white audiences. Famously, he was a founder member of Sinatra's "Rat Pack". Something¹s Gotta Give delivers it all. Here is all his most characteristic material from 1949 (11 fine Capitol recordings such as Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone and You Are My Lucky Star) through to 1955 Deccas, ending with his barnstorming Frankie And Johnny. The hits are there of course, the title track, Hey There, Love Me Or Leave Me, That Old Black Magic and so on, but there are also several examples of his brilliant impersonations of fellow singers and actors: The Way You Look Tonight, Just One Of Those Things, Can't You See I've Got The Blues? and the 5:28 of Because Of You. Sammy the tap-dancer is heard on Smile Darn Ya Smile. Among several tracks from his smash hit 1954 album are September Song, Easy To Love and that great career favourite Birth Of The Blues.

AL JOLSON / RADIO STARS OF AMERICA (5596)
57951
Russian born Asa Yoelson (1886-1950) really did earn, as Al Jolson, the self-awarded title: The World's Greatest Entertainer. Although he had 85 hits between 1912 and 1930, Jolson had probably the greatest comeback in music history with the 1946 film The Jolson Story. Suddenly his records were selling in millions (58 of his 40s recordings are on Let Me Sing And I'm Happy, CD AJS 272). He was a firm favourite with American radio audiences, appearing on countless programmes. Living Era's new CD offers seven extended excerpts from these shows between 1947 and 1950, with Jolson both singing many of his best-loved hits and engaging in playful banter with other greats of US entertainment, Bing Crosby, Eddie Cantor, Edward G. Robinson and Burns & Allen. The first four volumes in the Radio Stars of America series were Bing Crosby (CD AJA 5591), Jimmy Durante (CD AJA 5592), Burns & Allen (CD AJA 5593) and Jack Benny (CD AJA 5595).

Dino Crocetti (1917-1995), son of an Italian immigrant barber, became, as ³Dean Martin², an American entertainment icon the eternal essence of cool. He gained fame after the war as half of a double act with Jerry Lewis, but enjoyed even greater success after going solo, with a host of film roles as an actor, hit records as a singer and a permanent membership of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack. That's Amore was Dean's first million seller in 1953, and it provides the title for Living Era's portrait of the "early Dino", 28 smoothly relaxed performances of such favourites as Powder Your Face With Sunshine, I'll Always Love You, and You Belong To Me. Dino also uses his easy-going charm on such standards as When You're Smiling, Who's Sorry Now? and Walkin' My Baby Back Home. Included too is a rare duet with Peggy Lee (You Was).

JIMMY YOUNG / I'LL SING TO YOU (5636)
59719
Leslie Young, otherwise Sir Jimmy Young (b.1923), is of course most famous for 'the JY Prog' and as a doyen of broadcasters for more than 30 years. Only those of us well into our late 50s or beyond are likely to remember his days as a heart-throb crooner. Yet he was indeed once one of Britain's greatest popular singers and he has an enviable chart history to prove it. I'll Sing To You is exactly what Jimmy Young does on this Living Era release. Here are 28 of the best from the time when he was arguably Britain's no.1 male singer. His earliest success was the appropriately named Nat King Cole cover Too Young. He also had success duetting with Petula Clark on Broken Heart, and with standards such as Because Of You. Moving to Decca he broke into the charts with Faith Can Move Mountains before really hitting the bigtime and becoming the very first British artist to make No.1 with successive issues. These were The Man From Laramie and, before that, the immortal Unchained Melody. But Jimmy made many more fine recordings too, such as the Top Ten hit Eternally, and others such as Someone On Your Mind, Little Things Mean A Lot, You Belong To Me, Kiss Of Fire and It's All In The Game.
