VARIOUS ARTISTS / OLD MOUNTAIN: STRINGBAND SONGS & TUNES (5577)
55528
Old Mountain Stringband Songs & Tunes is Living Era's definitive single CD collection of the appealing country music genre that permeated the soundtrack of the hugely acclaimed film Cold Mountain. The irresistible combination of fiddles and banjos is one indelible aspect of America's musical heritage that all can enjoy. The heyday of country stringband music was captured in recordings of the late 20s and early 30s, when many of the finest practitioners were in their prime. Tony Russell has carefully chosen representative tracks by each of the old masters, including some familiar names - Gid Tanner & his Skillet Lickers, Uncle Dave Macon, Fiddlin' John Carson, Charlie Poole, Seven Foot Dilley, Georgia Yellow Hammers, Grayson & Whitter and many others largely forgotten today.

VARIOUS ARTISTS / SWEETEST HARMONY (5216)
20975
The crucial British early-jazz/vocal label ASV/Living Era compiled this collection of classic harmony groups from the '20s to the '40s, and it makes for an excellent primer of two-dozen classic tracks. Beginning with a side by one of the best early (recorded) units, "Breezin' Along With the Breeze" by the Revelers, Sweetest Harmony cycles through every touchstone artist -- the Mills Brothers, the Boswell Sisters, the Ink Spots, the Comedian Harmonists, the Merry Macs, the Three Keys -- with a good selection of tracks, pleasantly surprising to have-it-all collectors yet excellent for newcomers to harmony vocals. The compilation also comes through with some seriously obscurist names, from the Four Rajahs to the Viennese Seven Singing Sisters to the Rhythm Boys (the latter was a Paul Whiteman Orchestra unit including a pre-solo Bing Crosby). It also strikes a good balance between European/barbershop forms and the swing focus of later jazz units. Once you've worn out your compilations of early Mills Brothers/Boswell Sisters sides, Sweetest Harmony is a great place to find more in the same vein.

VARIOUS ARTISTS / THE SONGS OF COLE PORTER (5331)
30403
24 track compilation contains original mono recordings from 1927-48. 'In olden days a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking; now, Heaven Knows-anything goes!' These lines, so familiar to all who grew up with Ella Fitzgerald's 'Cole Porter Song Book', may still sound as much as wry summing-up of the Jazz Age as a monument to the sophisticated mind that penned them. For, unlike the other 'greats' of the Golden Age of song-writing, including Greshwin and Ker, Porter's policy was to write his own lyrics. Preferring the trust in own powers of imagiery, he began with a flair for words. In death he remains a foremost past master of both words and music.
[Item Code: 30403 CD: $11.00]
VARIOUS ARTISTS / THE SONGS OF HOAGY CARMICHAEL (5653)
61107
Most know him as the composer of Stardust, the most frequently recorded of all the great American standards. Carmichael was an innovator and major catalyst in bringing jazz before a wider audience. Viewed in retrospect, as the creator of several key 1930s-1940s commercial hit-songs he ranks among the most original pianist-songwriters in popular music history.
[Item Code: 61107 CD: $11.00]
VARIOUS ARTISTS / THE SONGS OF JULE STYNE (5606)
57953
Most prolific in the kndered spheres of 20th-century film and stage musicals, composer-songwriter Jule Styne wrote more than 1,500 published songs. Turing his attition instead to lighter music, jazz and dance, from the age of thirteen Julius could be found in the orchestra pits of local halls gaining experience in a different genre. In 1934, he moved to New York, earning a living freelancing on piano and was appointed resident conductor on Harry Richman's Lux radio show. He also swiftly gained a high reputation as a vocal coach and later that year was engaged in that capacity by 20th Century Fox's Russian-born president Joseph M. Schenck.
