VARIOUS ARTISTS / BEAT THE BAND TO THE BAR (A COLLECTION OF AMERICAN DANCE BAND FUN) (5599)
58170
Living Era nor any other label has ever issued a dance band record like Beat The Band To The Bar. 22 bands from Charlie Barnet to Rudy Vallee are heard letting their collective hair down and playing often satirical comic numbers. It's a riot! The centrepiece is Richard Himber's frequently requested Parade Of Bands, in which his band brilliantly impersonates a dozen other bands' styles and idiosyncracies (a great music quiz - answers in the booklet). The roster of bands is remarkable, including those of Glenn Miller, the Dorsey Brothers, Woody Herman, Louis Prima, Kay Kyser and Pete Rugolo.

VARIOUS ARTISTS / THE SONGS OF ARTHUR SCHWARTZ (5301)
29015
The claim that Arthur Schwarts had a special way with a song may seem at first a glib statement of the obvious, but his songs are always individually melodic and harmonically interesting, and among twentieth century songwriter-performers, witness his various attempts, including Louisiana Hayride and the medley commencing with Love Is A Dancing Thing, he displays a certain knack, that vocal 'twinkling of he eye' which superimposes the performer's perspective. True, when it cam to mixing metaphors and mingling Tin Pan Alley Moonlight with minor keys, Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern were already the undisputed helmsmen of a much longer line and by the time we arrive at Arthur "That's Entertainment" Schwartz's the medium has somehow altered, become more tongue-in-cheek, more selfdebunking.

VARIOUS ARTISTS / THE SONGS OF RALPH RAINGER (5398)
32505
Although the name of Ralph Rainger may not have stood the test of time like, say, those of Berlin, Gershwin or Porter, chances are that thousands will be familiar with the Academy Awards-winning Thanks For The Memory and also with many a Crosby number without realising that these were the work of pianist, composer-arranger and former lawyer Ralph Rainger. During the mid- 1920s Ralph became a professional pianist. A brilliant sight-reader, a fine technician and all-round improviser, he worked in dance and jazz ensembles as well as Broadway theatre ochestras and with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and was also for a time accompanist to the American dancer and singing actor Clifton Webb.

VARIOUS ARTISTS / THE SONGS OF SIGMUND ROMBERG (5642)
59388
One of the most valuable and successful sections of the Living Era catalogue is the wonderful Songs Of series, demonstrating the achievements of the great songwriters of the first half of the 20th century. So far there have been an extraordinary 23 releases covering such familiar names as Gershwin, Berlin, Porter, Kern and Rodgers, as well as lesser-known figures like Ahlert, Schwartz, Rainger and Woods. Number 24 is among the best, spotlighting the immortal songs of Hungarian-born American composer Sigmund Romberg (1887-1951). He was the last giant of American operetta, but to whatever style or mood he turned, Romberg was able to bring a charm uniquely his. Deep In My Heart (also the title of Rombergıs 1954 biopic) presents arguably his 25 finest songs. Romberg created a long string of musicals, the most memorable being his operettas of the 20s, The Student Prince, The Desert Song and The New Moon. From those, and other, rich scores come such wonderful evergreens as Lover, Come Back To Me, When I Grow Too Old To Dream, Softly As In A Morning Sunrise, One Alone, Serenade and so many more etched in everyoneıs memory. As with each of the Songs Of issues, an amazing roster of artists has been gathered together, in many cases associated with famous Romberg films. Thus the partnership of Nelson Eddy & Jeanette MacDonald is well represented (7 tracks), Mario Lanza sings four hits from the 1954 film of The Student Prince, and Tony
