| VARIOUS ARTISTS / MY FUNNY VALENTINE - VINTAGE SONGS OF LOVE (5648) |
Love is not the exclusive preserve of the young, and many a "Living Era-aged" music-lover has a romantic side. This CD is designed for them - but perhaps not exclusively since such excellence can be enjoyed by anyone with an ear for timeless miniature masterpieces. 24 of the most wonderful evergreen songs of love, from that golden age when songwriters really knew how to compose a great love song, are interpreted here by the supreme song stylists of the era. What better Valentinešs Day gift for a loved one? These fabulous songs come from the pens of such supreme masters as Jerome Kern (4), Cole Porter (4), Richard Rodgers (3), Ray Noble (2), George Gershwin, Hoagy Carnmichael and others. And the singers? Well there's Nat King Cole (Unforgettable . . .), Bing Crosby (True Love . . .), Frank Sinatra (My Funny Valentine . . .), Doris Day (The Very Thought Of You . . .), Dinah Shore (Dearly Beloved . . .), alongside just about every truly great balladeer of that heady period. [Item Code: 60179 CD: $11.00] |
| VARIOUS ARTISTS / THE SONGS OF HAROLD ARLEN (5159) |
25 track compilation of songs from 1931-44 contains legendary artists performing the music of composer Harold Arlen. Now generally regarded as one of the top American popular composers of the inter-War years, the "creator" of such monumental standards as Get Happy! and Stormy Weather and the immortal score of The Wizard Of Oz, harld Arien was by no means as universally well-known, despite significant early song sccesses, prior to the Hollywood film-musical boom of the mid-1930s. Around 1923, he evolved form ragtime to jazz proper, forming his own band, the Buffalodians, who made records in 1926. [Item Code: 13597 CD: $11.00] |
| VARIOUS ARTISTS / THE SONGS OF HARRY REVEL & MACK GORDON (5626) |
Number 22 in the ASV "Songs Of series" is among the best, spotlighting the immortal songs of American composer Harry Revel. This year we celebrate the centenaries of two great songwriters, both born in London, just 10 days apart, and both moving to the USA at an early age (the other is Jule Styne CD AJA 5606). Harry Revel (1905-1958), in collaboration with lyricist Mack Gordon (1904-1959), formed one of the hottest Hollywood partnerships of the 30s. Apart from their 1932 Underneath The Harlem Moon, all 25 evergreens included in Living Era's Did You Ever See A Dream Walking? were created for films between 1933 and 1938. These include Stay As Sweet As You Are, Goodnight My Love, Never In A Million Years, With My Eyes Wide Open I'm Dreaming, Love Thy Neighbour and A Star Fell Out Of Heaven. As with each of the Songs Of issues, an amazing roster of artists has been gathered together, wherever possible contemporaneous with the song's first appearance and in many cases associated with the original film. Pride of place goes to Bing Crosby, a champion of Revel's songs, but the line-up also includes Al Bowlly, Benny Goodman, Alice Faye, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Fats Waller, Patti Page, Dean Martin and many more.

| VARIOUS ARTISTS / THE SONGS OF HARRY WARREN (5139) |
25 tracks from 1931-43. Harry Warren, whose name has a resonance indissolubly linked with the lavish mid-30s Hollywood choreography of Busby Berkeley, wrote far more standards than could be accommodated in on CD compilation. A talented pianist and piano-accordionist in his youth, his grounding in the bread-and-butter work of playing in silent cinemas led eventually to this assistant directorship of the New York-based Vitagroph Cinema Comany in recognition of his outstanding compostional talent. Perhaps the most evocative of its era, and Warren's first Academy Award-winning song, Lullaby Of Broadway originated in the Warner Gold Diggers Of 1935; it was a real stunner thanks to Ruby Keeler's forthright delivery.
