The small group selections include some classic beauties of American popular song and illustrate Jeff's careful listening and his attention to the role of accompanist. | JEFF HAMILTON / SWING THAT MUSIC (7) |
|
Classic and Contemporary American Jazz from 1930's to 1950's. Here he is in total sideman mode, both hard-swinging and myrical. The broad mainstream of jazz make sthe Mississippi look like a creek; non-musicians often lose sight of just how much jazz and popular music players the caliber of Hamilton and Co. are expected to know. The tunes selected here prove it, and their sheer variety contibutes to the delight this session generates. [Item Code: 61993 CD: $16.00]

""Sunny Wilkinson is at the top of her game here. She has spent a lot of time refining her craft in the trenches and now emerges as a master songstress able to get inside of a song and find its essential emotional core."" | ART BLAKEY / WITH THELONIOUS MONK (55414) |
|
Although this album marks Thelonious Monk's sole recording as a member
of Art Blakey's celebrated Jazz Messengers, the pianist and drummer were
very close friends who understood each other well on both a personal and
musical level. In fact, Blakey was present on both Monk's first and last studio
sessions, spanning a period of 24 years from the 1947 quintet and trio
recordings to the last sets taped in London in 1971, when Blakey and Monk
were touring with the so-called "Giants of Jazz" (which also included Sonny
Stitt, Dizzy Gillespie, Kai Winding and All McKibbon). In fact, all of these
recordings (the 1947 sessions debuting the very personal musical conception
of Thelonious Monk, this amazing 1957 session with the Messengers made
during the highest point of Monk's career and the 1971 London session) are
true masterpieces in their own right. And Art Blakey's presence on all of them
is not purely accidental as he and Monk shared a common artistic feeling. As a bonus, an interesting live quartet version of "Bya-ya" with Monk, Blakey
and Griffin and three extremely rare live versions of Monk tunes recorded by
the Jazz Messengers during a TV show just a month after the studio album
was made, and appearing here on CD for the first time ever. [Item Code: 61978 CD: $15.00]
Track 01: Evidence |
| JOHN COLTRANE / COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS MASTER TAKES (55415) |
|
The complete studio master takes by the Thelonious Monk quartet and septet
featuring John Coltrane. As a bonus, we include a long blues performance from the same sessions (in which Monk sits out) and an outstanding alternate take of "Off Minor". After returning from his trip to Philadelphia, in mid-1957, Coltrane accepted Monk's offer and joined his band for a period of six months. They played at New York's Five Spot Cafe in a quartet format, which included bassist Ahmed Abdul Malik and drummer Shadow Wilson, in addition to Monk and Trane. Despite the exquisite quality of the band's music, it yielded relatively few studio recordings in formats ranging from the septet to the quartet. Although all the musicians play beautifully here, what is perhaps most interesting is the presence of both John Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins on tenor sax playing in the same session. Even if the Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane on tenor sax was Monk's regular group for half a year, their studio records are limited to what is included on this release. [Item Code: 61981 CD: $15.00]
Track 03: Well You Needn't |
| DUKE ELLINGTON / SUCH SWEET THUNDER (55416) |
|
The complete original album Such Sweet Thunder, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's musical vision of the works of William Shakespeare. As a bonus we offer three extra tracks from the same sessions that were not included on the original LP, as well as two other complete Ellington suites: The Harlem Suite & The Controversial Suite. For an African American jazz musician to compose a suite based on Shakespearian themes during the 1950s was certainly not an every day occasion. In fact, it would have been an ambitious project even for a classical composer. But as Irving Townsend explained in the original liner notes that follow, when the composer in question is the one-and-only Duke Ellington, no one is surprised at all. The result of many sessions, the current edition presents the complete original Such Sweet Thunder album (tracks 1-12) plus three tunes from the same sessions that were originally intended to form part of the suite but were later discarded ("Suburban Beauty", "A Flat Minor" and "Cafe Au Lait"). As a bonus, this release also includes two of Ellington's previous suites: The Harlem Suite, also known as A Tone Parallel to Harlem, and The Controversial Suite, a kind of humorous work written as a friendly critique of some of the different musical styles in jazz. [Item Code: 61982 CD: $15.00]
Track 01: Such Sweet Thunder |
| ELLA FITZGERALD / ELLA & LOUIS + ELLA & LOUIS AGAIN (55417) |
|
2-CD set. Louis Armstrong's career began nearly 15 years before Ella Fitzgerald's. In fact, Louis was one of Ella's first musical idols and even at the early stages of her career she would perform a song in her program (usually "Basin Street Blues") imitating Louis' voice. This routine - which can be heard and seen on different live performances by Ella - is done both as a joke and as a homage. By the early forties, Ella was already a well-known star. They first recorded together on January 18, 1946, when both waxed a single 78 rpm disc coupling "The Frim Fram Sauce" and "You Won't Be Satisfied". The latter turned out to be a hit, but they wouldn't return to the studio together until four years later. They made three LPs between 1956 and 1957, which with the sole exception of two live songs ("You Won't Be Satisfied" and "Undecided") recorded at a Hollywood Bowl concert on August 15, 1956 complete their collective discography. Those memorable albums were Ella & Louis, its sequel Ella & Louis Again and the selection of tunes from George Gershwin's folk opera Porgy & Bess. While the latter utilized a big orchestra conducted by Russell Garcia, the first two albums were made in a small group format (unlike their previous efforts, in which they were backed by big bands). And what an incredible small group! The Oscar Peterson Trio, featuring Herb Ellis and Ray Brown (who had been Ella's husband) received the addition of drummers Buddy Rich (on the first album) and Louie Bellson (on the second). The results: some of the most fascinating jazz music ever produced. [Item Code: 61983 2-CD: $25.00]
Track 01: Can't We Be Friends |
| JOHN COLTRANE / COMPLETE RECORDINGS (55420) |
|
3-CD set. The seminal quartet recordings compiled on this collection were made during a transitional period in John Coltrane's musical career. He had first joined
the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955 and would form his own celebrated quartet
with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones in 1960. Although Trane belonged to both the Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk groups, he also recorded studio sessions with other musicians and presented his own albums during this
period. Among them were many quartet sides, all of them featuring Red
Garland on piano and Paul Chambers on bass (both of whom he had known
from the Miles Davis Quintet). These quartets were, in many ways, the
predecessors of the 1960 John Coltrane Quartet, and in having the same
instrumentation and format, present Coltrane's true evolution from the
tentative tenor saxophonist who entered the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955 to
the complete artist that emerged five years later. [Item Code: 61979 3-CD: $35.00]

GIANT STEPS RECORDS
| DINAH WASHINGTON / THE BIRDLAND BROADCASTS (24) |
|
2-CD set. Self-styling herself as everything from 'Queen Of The Jukeboxes' to 'Queen Of The Blues', eventually settling on 'The Queen', Dinah wasn't overly concerned with attempts to categorize her natural talent. The full extent of her artistry is to be heard on these revealing broadcasts from Birdland, where she always played to standing-room-only crowds. Here, Dinah Washington's boisterous behaviour was more akin to her hosting no-holds barred private parties as opposed to a paid-for public performance. Throughout, Dinah is accompanied by the Wynton Kelly Trio. Whatever the song, it was impossible to confuse Dinah Washington with any other singer. Her voice was high-pitched, full on, and highly emotive. Gifted with precise cut-glass diction and perfect pitch, her delivery stretched from an intimate whisper to an orgasmic scream that could cut through concrete. A formidable weapon, Dinah's voice dug deep into the listeneršs emotions, leaving many an audience tear stained. [Item Code: 61587 2-CD: $16.00]

GOLDEN YEARS OF NEW JAZZ
| ANTHONY BRAXTON / SOLO (MILANO) 1979 VOL. 2 (23) |
|
Following the success and importance of the Solo (Milano) 1979 Vol. 1 released in 2003, it's only natural to release another solo concert played one day later. There are twelve pieces on this CD, but they do not overlap the compositions performed by Braxton the day before. Liner notes by Steve Day. [Item Code: 61902 CD: $19.00]

JAZZ TRACK
| STAN GETZ / (931) |
|
The complete original album Stan Getz and the Oscar Peterson trio, widely regarded as one of the saxophonist's finest recordings. A bonus track by the same band with the addition of drummer Connie Kay is also included here. The ballad was taped during a concert that preceded the aforementioned studio session by only three days. What we have here is not a good quartet, but an excellent one. In fact, it is the result of a well rehearsed trio: Oscar Peterson's celebrated unit with guitarist Herb Ellis and bassist Ray Brown, plus the beautiful sound of Stan Getz's tenor sax. Peterson and Getz display their truly creative interplay on these sides. This album constitutes their only studio album in a quartet format. The absence of drums adds a magical atmosphere to the warm sound of Getz's saxophone on the ballads, while on the swing tunes, Peterson's skill with his left hand combined with Ellis' rhythm guitar work leave no free space for a drummer. [Item Code: 62009 CD: $17.00]
Track 01: I Want To Be Happy |
| DUKE ELLINGTON / A DRUM IS A WOMAN (933) |
|
An indispensable and long unavailable Ellington suite. Includes the complete original album plus a rare tune from the same work omitted from the LP. During his long and prolific career, Duke Ellington composed music for concerts ranging from the most prestigious venues to dance halls. He also wrote for the theatre, for movies (with and without him on screen), and, of course, for records. The work contained on this album, however, originates from an early television special. "Another great opportunity occurred later in the year [1956]," wrote Duke Ellington in his memoirs titled Music Is My Mistress, "when we presented A Drum Is a Woman on the 'U.S. Steel Hour'. This musical fantasy or allegory told the story of jazz in terms of the adventures of Madam Zajj and Carribee Joe, from the Caribbean to the moon via Congo Square and Fifty-Second Street. It was in four parts with a dozen selections, two reprises, and a finale. Extra percussion, a harp, and the voices of Margaret Tynes, Joya Sherrill, and Ozzie Bailey were used, but what could not be experienced on the album was the radiant presence of Carmen de Lavallade, who danced so superbly in the television version." Our edition presents the complete original album A Drum Is a Woman plus a rare song played at the original TV show but omitted from the LP. [Item Code: 62010 CD: $17.00]
Track 01: Part 1: A Drum Is A Woman |
| CHET BAKER / PLAYBOYS (936) |
|
The complete classic album "Playboys" by Chet Baker & Art Pepper,
including both the originally released session and the first session
originally intended for this same project. The collaborations between Chet Baker and Art Pepper were originally issued in such a disparity of ways that it might seem difficult at first to think about them as a coherent body of work. Their first session, for instance, was originally segmented in a variety of compilation albums, one tune each, and many times the selections were even abridged, suppressing a solo here or there. (Although it was recorded at the Forum Theatre, in Los Angeles, the aforementioned date is not a live concert but a studio session, with no public.) Along with another equally splendid session, it was included in Baker and Pepper's most famous album together, Playboys, which was also released (with a totally different cover but identical liner notes!) under the title Picture of Heath (the title of the first song, and a reminder that nearly all of the album's tunes were Jimmy Heath's compositions -two are by Art Pepper). This edition restores the complete sessions that produced this outstanding album. [Item Code: 62011 CD: $17.00]

LONE HILL JAZZ
| HARRY JAMES / THE COMPLETE HARRY JAMES IN HI-FI (10310) |
|
2-CD set. Made during the first years of the LP era, the Harry James albums Harry James in Hi-Fi and More Harry James in Hi-Fi comprised some of the greatest hits of the James orchestra - a unit that by that time had been working unceasingly with few changes since 1939. Among the instrumental figures present on both of the 1955/56 albums were trombonist Juan Tizol (who had made a name for himself as part of the Duke Ellington orchestra) and saxophonist Willie Smith. By the time the LPs were made, both had been playing more than a decade with Harry James. Tizol entered the band in May 1944, while Smith joined a few months later, in November 1944. Both albums were best sellers when first issued, and are presented here in their entirety with the addition of four bonus performances that were taken from the More Harry James in Hi-Fi sessions but originally issued on compilation albums. Also added is the complete album Wild About Harry. [Item Code: 61984 2-CD: $25.00]
Track 01: Cherry |
| KAI WINDING / TROMBONE PANORAMA (10315) |
|
Contains Kai Winding's complete Trombone Panorama sessions, including three tracks that were not included on the album. This is the first time that any of this material is issued on CD and the first time that it is all compiled on just one release. Kai Winding is one of the most versatile, entertaining, and musically gifted jazzmen of this generation. He orchestrates for four trombones and rhythm - the Kai Winding Septet - and suggests the fullness of big-band ensemble without being an imitation of it. He plays superbly articulate trombone, with almost faultless intonation and phrasing, yet it comes out according to mood, robust, refined, or in choruses lovely of definition, casually cool of deliver. Alexander displays the varied influences that have shaped his musical evolution: bop, reggae, calypso, R&B and old-fashioned blues. Much of the album is bluesy, with some gospel edge. [Item Code: 61878 CD: $18.00]
