Track 01: Too Close For Comfort |
| HAL McKUSICK / PLAYS... BETTY ST. CLAIRE SINGS (103) |
|
In planning the arrangements for this album Billy Byers' first consideration was good taste. Each arrangement is styled and colored with the lyrics of the song in mind...each one written as it would be for symphony orchestra with guitar parts suggesting the missing instruments. This is Jazz in good taste...done with good technique. This is not only the music of today. This is a musical panorama...the jazz scene from the beginning. Betty St. Claire's unusual sound and style is heard on records for the first time. Hal ranks today as one of the great instrumentalists of our time. He is equaly at home with clarinet, flute, piccolo, tenor, alto and soprano. [Item Code: 13158 CD: $16.00]
Track 01: Out Of Nowhere |
| JIMMY CLEVELAND / 3 BONES AND A QUILL (105) |
|
This is, in the most honorific sense of the expression, a chorus record: everybody blows, and blows enough so that after a few tracks identities become clear and the force of personality becomes the dominant strength of the record. In this most venerable and most lasting of playing procedures in jazz, the individual must emerge - and fall flat on his face or take charge. Take charge they do in this collection, all of them. [Item Code: 62142 CD: $16.00]
Track 01: The Preacher |
| BILLY TAYLOR / TAYLOR MADE JAZZ (111) |
|
Taylor has listened to jazz and absorbed it and reflects its better moments in their playing. Such a union of forces couldn't have produced anything but the serenity and swing you hear on this set. It's a Taylor-made session, all right. And it will wear all. [Item Code: 62143 CD: $16.00]

| CHARLIE MARIANO / CHARLIE MARIANO PLAYS (115) |
|
All of the tunes are well-known standards with the exception of 'Green Walls' which was written by Charlie and S' Nice, also his own but based on the chord structure of 'S Wonderful. The sides: Slugger and Sapphire, originals (written by Claude and Stu repsetively), are both medium-fast things which give Stu, Charlie, and Claude a chance to wail. [Item Code: 62145 CD: $16.00]

| MEL TORME / AT THE CRESCENDO COMPLETE RECORDINGS 1954 & 1957 (476) |
|
The tunes on this 2-CD set were recorded at the Crescendo, one of the top Sunset Strip spots in Hollywood, during two Mel Torme engagements that took place in 1954 and 1957. Having them together, you have one of the greatest vocal displays on record rendered by one of the truly great artists of all time, Mel Torme. Mel had never displayed the vocal dexterity, the musicianship, the showmanship, the versatility, and the charm which are captured in these on-the-scene recordings. His well balanced programs and direct communication with the audience definitely made Torme one of the most appealing song stylists of his era. His voice was one of the most fluid, perceptive, jazz-influenced
sounds in music. [Item Code: 62094 2-CD: $26.00]

| CARMEN McRAE / FIRST SESSIONS
(477) |
|
These are the first recordings of one of the greatest jazz singers of all time: Carmen McRae. On these distinctive Stardust/Bethlehem and Decca sessions, Carmen found the right space, freedom and apt accompaniment for her beautiful singing. Relaxed and unpretentious, she impresses with the freshness and clarity of her sound, the lucidity of her diction, the instrumentalized flow and logic of her phrasing, and her fine beat. On a first rate set worth hearing over and over again, all the musicians involved perform with taste and skill in a textbook example of the art of jazz singing. [Item Code: 62095 CD: $16.00]

| DUKE ELLINGTON / THE COMPLETE ELLINGTON INDIGOS (527) |
|
As the original liner notes for the Indigos album clearly states, the Ellington orchestra not only performed in concert halls - presenting extended suites to be listened to from the comfort of a plush theatre seat - it was also a legendary dance band, accustomed to playing very personal versions of the most celebrated standards as well as the numerous compositions by its leader. It must be said, however, that the prolific Ellington book well outnumbered the renditions of tunes from Tin-Pan- Alley. Therefore, Duke and his long-time partner Billy Strayhorn's treatment of well known songs like "Willow Weep for Me", "Tenderly" and "Dancing in the Dark", always makes for an exciting listening experience. This edition put together for the first time ever all the material from the Indigos sessions, including two tunes omitted from the album and all of the alternate takes. [Item Code: 62085 CD: $17.00]

JAZZ TRACK
| MILES DAVIS / MILES AHEAD / BLUE MOODS (934) |
|
The complete original album miles ahead, Miles' first collaboration with the Gil Evans Orchestra and probably the best. As a bonus, we include another complete album, blue moods, an introspective LP made by miles in 1955 with a quintet featuring Charles Mingus and Elvin Jones. Although Miles Ahead was Miles Davis' first recording with the Gil Evans Orchestra, it was certainly not Evans and Davis' first collaboration. They had known and respected each other since the mid-forties and in 1948-49 they were the two primary architects behind the Birth of the Cool, with respect to both the perennial nonet album and the "cool" sound which became associated with it and which developed into a new jazz style. Gil and Miles' 1948-49 recordings both in the studio and broadcasted live from the Royal Roost in New York are among the true jewels of jazz history. The same can be said about Miles Ahead, a completely refined product in which the arrangements, the repertoire and the mood of every improvisation were carefully selected. This edition utilizes the original album cover, not frequently seen because Miles himself ordered it changed after the initial print. [Item Code: 62082 CD: $17.00]

| STAN GETZ / GETZ MEETS MULLIGAN IN HI-FI (935) |

They trade horns on the album's first three tracks, allowing the listener the rare opportunity to hear Getz on baritone and Mulligan on tenor. [Item Code: 62080 CD: $17.00]

| LOU McGARITY / MUSIC FROM SOME LIKE IT HOT / BLUE LOU / DIXIELAND SPECIAL (10321) |
|
Born in Athens, GA, on July 22, 1917 (he died on August 28, 1971), Lou McGarity was an American jazz trombonist, violinist and vocalist. He began playing violin when he was seven and switched to the trombone when he was 17. McGarity studied at the University of Georgia from 1934-36, gigged locally in the South (with Kirk DeVore and Nye Mayhew, among others), and toured with Ben Bernie from 1938-40. He is best known for his participation in different Benny Goodman formations throughout the 1940s. Although he is present on multiple recording sessions, his career as a leader is limited to just five sessions. The first one, consisting of four tunes, took place in New York in 1955 and featured a septet including trumpeter Yank Lawson and clarinetist Peanuts Hucko. It was only issued as an EP titled Dixieland Special and is included in its entirety on the current CD as bonus tracks. His following dates as a leader took place in 1959 and consist of the two LPs contained on this CD. These were the first albums ever issued under McGarity's name. Five years would pass prior to McGarity's next dates as a leader. He recorded the album In Celebration in 1964 with a quintet that included Dick Hyman on piano. McGarity's final album as a leader, Lou McGarity Jazz Master, was recorded in Virginia on December 6, 1970, shortly before the trombonist's death. [Item Code: 62086 CD: $15.00]

MINNEHAHA MUSIC
| CONNIE EVINGSON / I HAVE DREAMED (2001) |
|
For her first album under her name, Connie Evingson has chosen Broadway musicals as the session's theme, with a heavy dose of melodies written by Lerner and Loewe. Evingson has adopted unique arrangements to present this well-known music in a very novel and entertaining manner. She is joined in this endeavor with outstanding musicians from Minnesota's Twin Cities area, who happily engage with her as they present material from some of the Great White Way's finest musical moments. Evingson is armed not only with the requisite vocal technical skills, but with an imaginative and ingenious interpretative expertise which she displays to good effect on this album. [Item Code: 62114 CD: $17.00]
Track 01: Show Me |
| CONNIE EVINGSON / FEVER (2002) |
|
While Minneapolis-based Connie Evingson uses similar arrangements, she doesn't try to sound like Lee. Her voice is deep and sultry like Lee's, but it's also somewhat lighter. To her credit, Evingson's tribute is not only to songs that Lee sang, but to those she wrote, reminding us that the multitalented Ms. Lee was also a composer of some note. Most of the tunes on the album are familiar Lee fare. On "Black Coffee," Dave Karr's tenor sax assumes the role that Conte Candoli's muted trumpet played on the 1953 release. Another Lee classic, the sardonic "Is That All There Is?," is one of the album's highlights; Karr's flute is prominent on this cut. The Duke Ellington-Lee composition "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" is the album's barnburner, with Karr's sax swinging at a frenetic pace behind Evingson. Featuring a set of fine Minneapolis musicians, this album is not only a tribute to the inestimable brilliance of Peggy Lee, but also to the singing talent of Connie Evingson. [Item Code: 62113 CD: $17.00]
Track 01: I Love Being Here With You |
| CONNIE EVINGSON / SOME CATS KNOW (2003) |
|
The CD is a tribute to jazz 'elders', and features guest artists Toots Thielemans, Doc Severinsen, Ray Brown, Jack McDuff, Al Grey and others. Highlights of the record include Toots Thielemans on his own composition, 'Bluesette', Ray Brown on the title track 'Some Cats Know', and Doc Severinsen on ''Round Midnight' and 'I've Got the World on a String'. [Item Code: 62112 CD: $17.00]
Track 01: Some Cats Know |
| CONNIE EVINGSON / THE SECRET OF CHRISTMAS (2004) |
|
Connie Evingson's set of Christmas jazz has plenty of variety and mood changes. The warm singer performs a medley of "Snowfall" and "I Love the Winter Weather," interacts with guest trumpeter Doc Severinsen on the Latin jazz number "Gesu Bambino," takes a brief "Silent Night" a cappella, and duets with guitarist/vocalist Robert Everest on "A Cradle in Bethehem." Most impressive is "The Nutcracker Petite Suite," which has the singer's lyrics to six parts of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite in a very coherent six-and-a-half-minute story. Mixing together the celebratory with the reverent, The Secret of Christmas is both entertaining and respectful. Recommended for one's Christmas jazz collection. [Item Code: 62111 CD: $17.00]
Track 02: Carol Of The Bells |
| CONNIE EVINGSON / LET IT BE JAZZ CONNIE EVINGSON SINGS THE BEATLES (2005) |
|
In the past, Evingson has paid tribute to Peggy Lee -- a logical choice for a jazz vocalist -- and on this 2003 release, she makes 13 Beatles classics sound equally logical in a jazz setting. She embraces Lennon/McCartney compositions exclusively, and quite a few pleasant surprises occur -- surprises that range from a reference to Miles Davis' "All Blues" on "Blackbird" to a Brazilian-minded interpretation of "From Me to You." Meanwhile, "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Got to Get You into My Life" are two examples of songs that Evingson takes out of British Invasion rock/power pop and places in a jazz-noir setting. Let It Be Jazz is not only a demonstration of Evingson's skills as a jazz improviser; it also shows how durable the Fab Four's material continued to be 33 years after their breakup. [Item Code: 62110 CD: $17.00]
Track 01: Blackbird |
| CONNIE EVINGSON / GYPSY IN MY SOUL (2006) |
|
A versatile singer with a warm voice and a quietly swinging style, Connie Evingson explores the usually instrumental Gypsy jazz style during this highly enjoyable project. On various selections she is joined by either Pearl Django, the Clearwater Hot Club, or the Parisota Hot Club, quartets that are sometimes augmented by accordion, vibes, drums, and/or percussion. She performs swing standards, Susannah McCorkle's lyrics to Django Reinhardt's "Nuages," and her own words to "Django's Premonition" (originally known as "Anouman"). The strong repertoire, the instrumental colors, and Evingson's voice are three reasons that Gypsy in My Soul is recommended. [Item Code: 62109 CD: $17.00]
Track 01: Nature Boy |
| CONNIE EVINGSON / STOCKHOLM SWEETNIN' (2007) |
|
Stockholm Sweetnin', is both stunning and uniquely Connie. Hot Club of Sweden guitarists Gustav Lundgren and Andreas Oberg and bassist Hampus Lundgren form the core rhythm section, with brilliant solo turns by each player. Guest artists from both sides of the Atlantic add their unique voices on saxophone, clarinet, accordion and percussion, but the most distinctive voice belongs to Connie, as vocalist, arranger, and lyricist (on Oberg's "Autumn in Kokkola"). Of the fifteen tracks that fill Stockholm Sweetnin', six are familiar hot club repertoire. Two tracks display Connie Evingson's talents as a multi-lingual artist. "Besame Mucho," sung in Spanish, more often played as a hot club instrumental, breathes Latin color and charm, thanks in part to Joan Griffith's introduction on Spanish acoustic guitar. "Si Tu Savais" by Georges Ulmer is another popular hot club instrumental given new life through Connie's vocals, this time in French. [Item Code: 62108 CD: $17.00]

SAVANT
| JIM SNIDERO / TIPPIN' (2086) |
|
Altoist Jim Snidero started his professional career in 1981 by playing for a year with organist Jack McDuff. After nearly a quarter-century of other musical experiences, he sat in with his friend, organist Mike LeDonne, in 2006 and enjoyed returning to the basic blues, ballads and standards. Their 2007 recording features Snidero playing more boppish and a bit more basic than one might expect, perfectly fitting into the idiom. He caresses the melodies of ballads and brings out the bluish side of the faster tunes. Snidero also contributes three swinging originals, including a tribute to Frank Wess, "Let's Be Frank." Mike LeDonne shows once again that he is one of the top organists around today while guitarist Paul Bollenback and drummer Tony Reedus are as consistent, swinging, and stimulating as ever. TCB
| DUKE ELLINGTON / LIVE IN ZURICH, SWITZERLAND 2.5.1950 (43062) |
|
The 1950 edition of Duke Ellington's famous orchestra offered an extremely
intensive and emotionally deep performance. Ellington's orchestra must be
termed "unique," for it preceded all others at that time. Soloists like Ray Nance, Ernie Royal, Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, Lawrence Brown, Jimmy Hamilton, and Ellington's alter ego Billy Strayhorn offered great performances - the same way they would for another 25 years! Only long-time drummer Sonny Greer, who suffered from "burn-out syndrome," had to be supported by drummer Butch Ballard. A considerable amount of these arrangements were written by the leader for the respective soloist, all of them great personalities. Add the beautiful soprano voice of the lovely Kay Davis, and you'll get an idea of a perfect performance by the best orchestra of that time. [Item Code: 62029 CD: $16.00]
Track 01: Suddenly It Jumped |
| LOUIS ARMSTRONG / LIVE IN ZURICH, SWITZERLAND 2.5.1950 (43072) |
|
The band Louis Armstrong offered his European audiences in 1949 was indisputably the best to be found amongst the New Orleans-oriented musicians. The best of all trombonists (Jack Teagarden), a genuine Creole clarinetist (Barney Bigard), a towering virtuoso pianist (Earl Hines) - all are featured with their own solo tunes. All of these virtuosos need no further introduction nor any information about their previous career - this remains one of the most impressive performances of solid, well-played jazz and TCB Music is proud to present this great, historic concert on CD! [Item Code: 62030 CD: $16.00]
