ACE
| B.B. KING / THE JUNGLE (31) |
|
The Jungle was assembled by Kent/Modern to ride the success of BB's 1967 R&B and Hot 100 hit of that title. Although none of what it contained was new (BB having been an ABC artist since 1961), several of the mixes and overdubs were exclusive to this package, giving King fans who need everything the perfect excuse to buy it. This CD reissue was reassembled from the tapes that were used for that original Kent album. Even though some of those tapes have since been used in the compilation of Ace's other King reissues, others - including the stereo version of the title track - are nevertheless making their Ace debut in this CD.

VINTAGE MUSIC PRODUCTIONS
| MATTY MATLOCK / UNSUNG MUSICIAN - ARRANGER (241) |
|
Matlock was hired by Ben Pollack in 1929 to fill the clarinet chair, which had recently been vacated by Benny Goodman. During the years that he was with Pollack, Matty Matlock also recorded with Jack Teagarden and a couple of studio bands, but he remained with Pollack, until 1934. Pollack's obsession with Doris Robbins compelled the band to mutiny and eventually install Bob Crosby as the new frontman. During the Crosby Orchestra's first three years, Matlock recorded frequently with other bands, including those of Wingy Manone (1934-1937), Vic Berton (1935), Gene Gifford (1935) and Connie Boswell (1936-1937). In 1937, he even left the Crosby band to perform with Bunny Berigan, but this only lasted a few months. On his return to the Crosby Orchestra, Matlock became much more involved with the band's arrangements, especially after 1938, when Tommy Dorsey enticed Dean Kincaide away from the band. This left Matlock as the chief arranger. He also performed with the Bob Cats and appeared with the orchestra. These sessions included his "Paducah Patrol" (six LPs) and the "Rampart Street Paraders" recordings (four LPs). In 1950, Matlock directed the soundtrack for the Columbia film, "When You're Smiling." In 1951, he appeared in the feature, "Rhythm Inn" (Monogram 1951), as well as several Snader Telescriptions, including "Panama," "Savoy Blues" and "Who's Sorry Now?" It was also in 1951 that Matlock played in the NBC radio show, "Pete Kelly's Blues." [Item Code: 62063 CD: $14.00]
