| VARIOUS ARTISTS / NEW YORK BLUES (3013) |
|
(2-CD set) These 48 recordings, all made in New York City between 1949 and 1954 illustrate just how relatively small a coterie of musicians were involved in producing Blues and R&B records in that City. Most of the artists featured here display varying degrees of regional styles but nothing could actually be described as 'New York Blues' because there literally was no such thing. The closest the city had to a "style" is that commonly known as Piedmont. This style of blues was popular in the Carolina areas and when many of its black residents migrated to New York the style went with them. [Item Code: 61929 2-CD: $15.00]

Convergence is a group made up of the "best of the best" musicians based in Colorado, including trumpeter Greg Gisbert, saxophonist John Gunther, trombonist Mark Patterson, pianist Eric Gunnison, bassist Mark Simon and drummer Paul Romaine. "I Can Be There" is their 4th release for Capri and possibly their best. Most of the tunes are originals that swing hard and leave room for plenty of improvisation and musical humor. These cats have been playing together since they were teenagers and have been known as Convergence for over 15 years. Their music was recently showcased nationally on the Taste of the Nation broadcast on NPR. [Item Code: 62127 CD: $15.00]

CHERRY RED RECORDS
| CHICO HAMILTON / SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS (132) |
|
One of the most important films of the fifties, Sweet Smell Of Success boasts one of the great jazz scores; a combination of abstract jazz themes written and performed by the Chico Hamilton Quintet and a furious orchestral score by the masterful Elmer Bernstein. These albums were released separately in 1957 - both became very considerable rarities - and are here combined in a single edition in digital format for the first time. Sweet Smell Of Success is memorable for the vicious performances of Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis and its uniquely nasty view of the tough underbelly of New York fifty years ago. It was directed by Alexander Mackendrick ('The Ladykillers' 'Whisky Galore' 'The Man In The White Suite' 'Mandy') Its audience is with jazz and film buffs and the eternally stylish! [Item Code: 62197 CD: $17.00]

| THE MODERN ART OF JAZZ / THE MODERN ART OF JAZZ (6935) |
|
This is a fascinating mixture of the familiar - the swinging drive of Zoot Sims and Al Cohn, the sensitive piano of Hank Jones - and the not so familiar which includes not only Matthew's use of the button-key accordion but the mix of instruments. [Item Code: 62195 CD: $13.00]

| ZOOT SIMS / THE RARE DAWN SESSIONS (6943) |
|
The first seven tracks are from a January session for which Sims teamed up with valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, whose smooth, articulate style gained him prominence in the sixties. The final three tracks, have a different texture. In the ocean that makes up the recorded legacy of Zoot Sims, these sides are but sprays, but they reflect an important phase in the evolution of this memorable player's considerable talent. Splash your ears and enjoy. [Item Code: 62194 CD: $13.00]

| STAN GETZ / THE RARE DAWN SESSIONS (6944) |
|
This CD reissue, which features four classic tenor-saxophonists, brings back material released by Biograph on LPs in the 1980s. Stan Getz jams on four songs with a five-piece rhythm section that includes pianist Al Haig and guitarist Jimmy Raney in 1949, Wardell Gray uses a similar group on his two pieces, Paul Quinichette does his impressions of Lester Young on two songs in a quintet with trumpeter Gene Roland and pianist Nat Pierce, and Zoot Sims swings on six pieces with a quintet including trumpeter Jerry Lloyd. The music should satisfy straightahead jazz fans and, although no longer all that rare, it serves as a good introduction to the work of the four fine tenors [Item Code: 62192 CD: $13.00]

| PAUL QUINICHETTE / THE KID FROM DENVER (6947) |

| BUTCH THOMPSON / PLAYS JELLY ROLL MORTON (6952) |
|
For his recording debut, 24-year-old pianist Butch Thompson performs a dozen selections associated with Jelly Roll Morton, including a couple ("Tiger Rag" and Scott Joplin's "Original Rags") not actually composed by Morton but performed during his Library of Congress sessions. Thompson, who has long been considered one of the top interpreters of Morton's music, already had his technique and sound down at this early stage, and his solo recital (reissued on CD) is excellent. Highlights include "King Porter Stomp," "Tiger Rag," "Pep" and "The Crave." [Item Code: 62188 CD: $13.00]
Track 01: King Porter Stomp |

upholds the high standards he's set on his previous nine albums for the label. [Item Code: 61893 CD: $18.00]
Track 01: Day In Day Out |
| JOHN SWANA / BRIGHT MOMENTS (1301) |
|
For his tenth Criss Cross date as a leader, trumpeter John Swana presents his first twin-tenor sextet. Swana, tenor saxophonists Eric Alexander and Grant Stewart, pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington have intersected on many occasions, but never together in a group. Bright Moments focuses largely on original material with a couple of standards thrown in for good measure; but the writing is so captivating, the performances so attention-grabbing, that it feels like an album of well-known songs. The ever-inventive Swana creates here challenging contexts for his sextet, with an emphasis on hard-swinging and refined balladry. [Item Code: 61894 CD: $18.00]

UNIVERSE
| CHET ATKINS / CHET ATKINS AT HOME...PLUS (179) |
|
At a time when the newly invented term Hi-Fi was a buzz word of the music business, Chet Atkins, like many artists of that era, recorded albums using the most advanced technologies of the time in order to put the qualities of the 'modern stereo systems' to the test. But it is with no doubt thanks to Mr. Guitar's incredible playing that this 1958 "At Home", self-recorded LP was particularly effective: the sounds of the guitar were pristine and the tracks are among Atkins's best. From Classical and Jazz to Country and Pop, Chet was able to play any style with conviction and that is more than evident on this CD. [Item Code: 62077 CD: $20.00]
