ACROBAT
THE COACHMEN / HOOTENANNY (4244)
61927
The Coachmen undeservedly never hit the big-time during the folk boom which started in the early '60s. Despite this, they racked up a huge amount of quality and timeless tracks. The Coachmen were destined to be little more than a footnote during those late fifties, early sixties days when folk music was the new rock 'n' roll, but they had much more to give than may be evident from the record books. Put on this CD and get ready for a hootenanny!

BLACK HAWK RECORDS
JESSICA WILLIAMS / NOTHIN' BUT THE TRUTH (513)
61934
By 1986 pianist Jessica Williams had largely developed her own style and sound. Influenced by Thelonious Monk but improvising with her own voice (and a rather phenomenal technique), Williams performs four of her originals, the standard "Stars Fell on Alabama" and two Monk tunes ("Ugly Beauty" and "'Round Midnight"). Jessica Williams' witty and consistently surprising playing on the trio set with bassist John Wiitala and drummer Bud Spangler is quite memorable and enjoyable.

JABBO SMITH / HOT JAZZ IN THE TWENTIES, VOLUME 2 (6961)
62190
This is the second of two volumes containing all the recordings that placed Jabbo Smith on the jazz map and gave him high status among ardent devotees of early jazz. 62157
More hidden gems from the Edison vaults! A rare, unreleased, digitally remastered spotlight on the Roaring 20s. For those of you who believe that there is little jazz or blues on the Edison label will be pleasantly surprised by this CD. Thomas Edison's dislike of Jazz and Dance Music was well known, quoted as saying: "I always play Jazz records backwards, they sound better that way." Despite his personal views, Jazz Bands and Dance Orchestras were issued on his label, many recording purely for the Edison label.

MITCH PALIGA / FALL NIGHT (82497)
61904
Fall Night is comprised of all original music by Chicago-based soprano saxophonist Mitch Paliga, featuring his quartet & with special guest, guitarist John McLean. The music goes from the melancholy "QP Doll" to the quasi-early electric Miles Davis sound on "Over and Over" to the old world, natural minor tonality of "Blues for October". Also included are a selection of tunes that were inspired by childhood memories of small town Montana fall and winter nights. Paliga is a member of the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective and he regularly appears around the country with actor Gary Sinise's Lt. Dan Band.

Graham uses vehicles like "All the Things You Are" and the original, up-tempo "Rocket Science" to explore more complex harmonic progressions, while "Pig-Pig" features a catchy melody over a swinging New Orleans street-beat. David Hazeltine contributes sextet arrangements of the Isley Brother's "For the Love of You" and The Stylistic's hit "You Make Me Feel Brand New."

RARE LIVE RECORDINGS
CHARLIE PARKER / BIRD AT ST. NICK'S COMPLETE (88633)
62208
All the St. Nick's material compiled on one set for the first time ever. One of Parker's most acclaimed live recordings. The current CD contains the complete Bird at St. Nick's album (tracks 1-13) plus all of the additional material taped that same evening (tracks 14-22). As a bonus, we end our CD with another rare private recording by Bird, including Sarah Vaughan as guest vocalist on one track. The St. Nick's date was privately recorded by tenor saxophonist Don Lanphere with the collaboration of trombonist Jimmy Knepper (who was best known for his multiple collaborations with Charles Mingus and for being knocked out by Mingus during a dispute! Knepper also wrote the original liner notes for the first issue of St. Nicks). Bird was relaxed on these recordings. His talent and invention transcends the obvious limitations of the recording quality. In addition to the tunes included on the original album (tracks 1-13 of our CD) we have also added all of the other material taped that evening, previously appearing separately on a long out of print CD. This is the first time all the St. Nick's material is compiled on just one edition (a previous edition titled "complete", combined the original LP with a 1948 live session at the Three Deuces recorded by Dean Benedetti, but didn't include the rest of the St. Nick's material, which constitutes tracks 14 to 22 of the current edition). As a bonus, we end our CD with another rare private recording by Bird taped at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Philadelphia in June 1951 (again only Bird's solos were recorded). Sarah Vaughan is a guest star on "This is Always", which is particularly interesting in that it is Bird's only live version of this tune, and his only recording of it apart from the Dial studio takes with Earl Coleman's vocals.

DAVE BRUBECK / COMPLETE 1958 BERLIN CONCERT (88636)
62211
Drummer Joe Dodge left the Dave Brubeck quartet in 1956 to spend more time with his wife and children. He was replaced by Joe Morello. Bassist Norman Bates also left the group the following year for the comforts of home and family. Brubeck chose Eugene Wright to take his place on bass. With Morello and Wright in the fold, the "Classic Quartet" was born. Although Brubeck and Desmond played with several musicians over the years, this new group of Brubeck, Desmond, Wright and Morello would become the most famous of Brubeck's bands. The Quartet had been together for about a year when the State Department hired them for a "goodwill" tour of Europe in 1958. Brubeck, Desmond, Wright and Morello made the trip across the Atlantic and performed across two continents for audiences in England, Germany, Scotland, Denmark, Belgium, Holland, Turkey, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. Although four of the six tunes performed in Berlin appeared on a long out of print edition, this is the first time the complete concert appears on CD ("The Duke" and "One Moment Worth Years" have never been previously issued on any format).

SENSATION
IRVING MILLS / VOLUME 1 (24)
27640
Irving Mills had a multifaceted career as a promoter (most notably for Duke Ellington), manager, occasional vocalist, and lyricist. From 1928-1930, he led and organized a series of recordings under the title of "the Hotsy Totsy Gang." The British Retrieval label reissued all of the music on three definitive LPs in the 1980s. This album features music from five different studio bands with such young sidemen as cornetist Jimmy McPartland, Dudley Fosdick on mellophone, Jack Pettis on C-melody sax, guitarist Eddie Lang, drummer Ben Pollack, trombonist Jack Teagarden, and clarinetists Benny Goodman and Jimmy Dorsey, among others. Mills sings two songs. Among the hotter numbers are "Doin' the New Low Down," "Digga Digga Do," "Futuristic Rhythm," and "Out Where the Blues Began." Four alternate takes are included on this excellent set, which is highly recommended (if it can be found) to 1920s collectors.

SEPIA
DENNY DENNIS / THE BLUEST KIND OF BLUES (1108)
62240
After touring the USA, Denny completed a season in New York's Pennsylvania Hotel where his initial six month contract was renewed for a further six months. Because of a recording ban by the American Federation of Musicians, Denny only recorded five sides with Tommy Dorsey before family problems forced him to return to Britain where he was never to recapture his former glory. All but one of the 26 tracks here were recorded in the 1940s, many on CD for the first time and these twenty six tracks confirm exactly how good Denny Dennis the singer was.

PAT BOONE / APRIL LOVE / TAMMY AND THE BACHELOR (1109)
62241
In 1957, two movies each featuring romance, a chart-topping theme song and a happy ending did particularly good business at the box office. For pop vocalist Pat Boone, the leading role in "April Love" gave him the chance to prove that he could do more than sing while for Debbie Reynolds in the title role of "Tammy And The Bachelor", it was an opportunity to show that the girl from "Singing In The Rain" had blossomed into a more than competent actress. The movie "April Love" had Pat starring opposite Shirley Jones The song April Love appears at various times throughout the film, but this soundtrack rendition isn't the one that made it to Number One for six weeks, but a separately recorded pop version which we have also included here. The "April Love" sound track reached 12th position in the US Album charts. Tammy, the theme song sung by Debbie was a Number One hit in America for five weeks. Also included is a version of 'Tammy' by The Ames Brothers, heard over the movie's opening credits, and incidental background music to both films. The four bonus tracks are pop songs recorded by Debbie Reynolds.

JANE RUSSELL / THE MAGIC OF BELIEVING (1110)
62242
Although film star Jane Russell's screen image was that of a sex goddess, her private life lacked the scandals that involved other actresses of the time. Brought up in a religious home Jane actively practiced her faith in Hollywood and together with two other soloists - Connie Haines and Beryl Davis, the girls formed a trio performing inspirational songs mainly at benefits and it was a winning combination. Their repertoire ran the gamut from solid spirituals to religious ballads and rocking novelties. "Do Lord", the first record release from the girls was a hit and their charities began to prosper from record sales. Bonus tracks are songs Jane performed in her movies The French Line and The Revolt Of Mamie Stover, and showcasing her comic timing in the two rare narratives - "Hollywood Cinderella" and "Hollywood Riding Hood".

STOMP OFF
LES RED HOT REEDWARMERS / APEX BLUES - PLAYING THE MUSIC OF JIMMIE NOONE'S APEX CLUB ORCHESTRA (1425)
62158
The name of this group is quite apt as the front line is clarinet and alto sax and they are Hot! Are they ever! Their model is Jimmie Noone's Apex Club Orchestra which was the resident band at the Apex Club, Chicago, 1928-1931. The Reedwarmers' first CD, Stomp Off CD 1416, has been very well received by fans and musicians alike; this new one is even better, due in part to a recording with a more immediate presence that enables the listener to hear and feel the considerable emotion conveyed by these remarkable musicians. The closing tune on this CD is entitoled "Love (Your Magic Spell Is Everywhere)." We very sincerely believe you, our Stomp Off collectors, will indeed love this CD, as the Reedwarmers' magic spell is everywhere.

WEST END
GLENN MILLER / AT THE MOVIES - THE ESSENTIAL COLLECTION (930)
62130
We have painstakingly gathered together all the great mans' music featured in the movies and here we present it for your audio delight! Miller was convinced that it was appearing in the films Sun Valley Serenade and Orchestra Wives that had firmly established his name internationally rather than the success of the classic In The Mood. Featured here are songs by such legendary songwriters of the period as George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen and Harry Warren.
