Description
Suzy Williams has for many years been delighting audiences on both coasts with her bravura singing, starting in the late '70s in New York with partner Norman Zamcheck, as 'Stormin' Norman & Suzy.' Bessie Smith was her first big influence, to the extent that for years Suzy wouldn't use a microphone, because Bessie didn't. More to the point, her voice and style quickly won praise everywhere, including this rave from no less experienced a listener than Eubie Blake: 'I've been in show business for 74 years. I've heard a lot of women try to imitate Negroid singing. You've got it perfect. So many before you were born tried, but they never did it. You have it down pat. More power to you' Since then, Suzy has drawn inspiration from all directions, Sophie Tucker to June Christy to Barry White, and today has a style and sound distinctly her own. In 2007, Suzy turned her full attention to songwriting, something she had done only occasionally until then. In less than three years, she has composed over 70 lyrics and tunes, fifteen of which appear on this CD. They are funny ('Get an Older Man, Darling'), poignant ('Slow Down, September'), swinging ('Enjoy the Ride!'), goofy ('I'm in Lust!'), sensual ('Over the Threshhold'); hard and blue ('Get Yer Own Bad Habits') - all infused with wit and warmth, and all decidedly classifiable as way better late than never. This production, the first in-house, original Superbatone project, was done the old-fashioned way, using a single microphone in an inviting acoustic space, recorded live to digital in real time in complete takes. The high quality of the perfomances thus speaks for itself.
