GREG ABATE
BOP CITY LIVE AT BIRDLAND | |
Description:
On a Sunday night in late July 1991, Birdland welcomed saxophonist Greg Abate, James Williams piano, Rufus Reid bass and Kenny Washington drums into its post bop setting to showcase and record for the first time the wonderful intensity which fills his writing and his playing. In 1973, he took over the lead alto chair from David 'Fathead' Newman in the Ray Charles Orchestra. Then in 1985, leader Dick Johnson brought Greg into the revived 16 piece Artie Shaw Band. He stayed until 1987, then stepped out on his own. |
