TOSHIKO AKIYOSHI / CHARLIE MARIANO
TOSHIKO - MARIANO QUARTET | |
Description:
When Norman Granz took his touring JATP group to Japan in 1954, it did not take the musicians long to discover an amazingly talented Bud Powell like pianist. Surprisingly, the pianist was a Japanese girl, Toshiko Akiyoshi, who was soon coaxed into a recording studio. It was not long before her fame spread to the U.S where she made a considerable impact on critics and musicians. In Nov. 1959, she married alto saxist Charlie Mariano they have since been divorced; Toshiko is now the wife of saxist Lew Tabakin. The husband and wife team worked together and Candid recorded them shortly after their first wedding anniversary. This album has always been one of the rarest items from the catalog. |
