These outstanding recordings extend the top class jazz CD series of releases from the SWR Big Band, which plays with great potential and once again gives proof of its international caliber. The signature features of Toshiko Akiyoshi’s compositional style are unmistakable: it is rooted in bebop but features an amalgamation of big band jazz with Japanese musical elements and an ingenious use of the woodwind section. In May 2007 she had her first opportunity to cooperate with the SWR Big Band. With untiring energy and rousing motivational power, the worldrenowned pianist rehearsed thirteen of her own pieces with the band, covering a broad spectrum from bebop power play to soft ballads. |
