MILDRED BAILEY

SMOKE DREAMS

Description:
This anthology collects the best recordings which Mildred Bailey waxed betwwen 1936 1939 with accompaniment by the excellent orchestra headed by her husband, vibraphonist Red Norvo. At the time, the couple's success was such that the public nicknamed them "Mr. and Mrs. Swing" as a tribute to their efficient arrangements mostly written by Eddie Sauter and their relaxed performing style. This selection of titles, emblematic of the unusual subtlety and purity of sound which was the trademark of the Norvo Bailey big band, also includes a bonus track featuring a small group sounding just like the ones which were backing Billie Holiday around that time.
