CHET BAKER

EACH DAY IS VALENTINE'S DAY

Description:
Here are twelve selections from what might be described as Chet's heyday his essential recordings from the Pacific Jazz label. This is 1950s Los Angeles and New York, when jazz began to be polarized by coast, and when cool and hot jazz fought for supremacy. Chet Baker was somehow in both camps, but his refelctions on love and loss here, particularly in the tones of his voice, put Chet in the cool camp. These reflections are all bittersweet. But the emotions evoked by this music transcend categories. Chet's romantic yearning reaches all of us. Love is the thing we want, it says., but it includes the very potential for disappointment. And still that's okay.
