Description:
On July 30th, 1949, two great bands came together with arbitrator Stan Kenton at the Rendezvous Ballroom, Balboa Beach, CA, to perform what was to become known as the battle of the bands. The lineup features stars such as Maynard Ferguson, Eddie Safranski, Al Porcino, Shorty Rogers, Earl Swope, Bill Harris, Gene Ammons, Jimmy Giuffre, Oscar Pettiford, Terry Gibbs, Serge Chaloff, Bart Varsalona and Shelley Manne. Kenton is heard discussing the event with the two protagonists, and at the end, the bands of Woody Herman and Charlie Barnet join forces for a mighty finale "More Moon" featuring Kenton on piano. Includes two bonus tracks featuring June Christy singing "Midnight Sun" and "Blue Moon."
