BEN BERNIE

AND HIS ORCHESTRA

Description:
In the spring of 1925, Bernie was invited by his brother Dave to make a guest appearance with his orchestra at Ciro's Club. Ben was so taken with the young pianist in Dave Bernie's band, that he hired him on the spot. Thus Oscar Levant, later a celebrated Gershwin interpreter and film star, became a member of the Ben Bernie Orchestra. By the mid to late 1920s, Bernie had assembled a formidable array of talented musicians in his band, and his position as a major name in the Brunswick record catalogue they had taken over Vocalion in late 1924 meant that he got to record both some of the biggest hits of the day and many of the 'peppy' tunes that proliferated at the time, on which Jack Pettis, Bill Moore and the other sidemen could shine, either as soloists or collectively. Of particular interest are the group of sessions from 1928 and 1929, which were made in both vocal and non vocal versions. Brunswick had, by 1928, international affiliations, including mainland European and Latin American countries, and it was felt that English language vocals would hinder sales in non English speaking countries. Consequently, many sessions by Bernie and other Brunswick dance bands were made with and without vocal choruses. Usually the extra instrumental chorus was either a straight piano solo or an additional repeated chorus, nothing too taxing, but on the delightful 'When Polly Walks Through the Hollyhocks' and 'Ten Little Miles From Town' the extra instrumental choruses are filled by excellent solos.
