RAY BRYANTTRIO
HIGH FIDELITY | |
Description:
Although Ray and Tommy Bryant played and recorded together on many occasions, the sessions contained on this CD mark the only trio recordings by the brothers with drummer Oliver Jackson. The three of them toured with Coleman Hawkins and Roy Eldridge in 1958 and some of their performances were recorded, but being accompanists to those two great swing giants, their interplay in that context is of a very different character than the one present on these sessions. The same can be said of their 1960 quartet collaborations with trumpeter Charlie Shavers. The first twelve tracks on this CD were originally issued on an LP titled Ray Bryant Plays, in which he interpreted tunes by other jazz artists. The last two tracks presented here as "Little Susie" 1 and 2 are two versions of a Ray Bryant composition dedicated to his daughter Susie. The versions included here, featuring Oliver Jackson, were originally issued as sides A and B of a single disc, and for unknown reasons were presented as "Little Susie Part 2" and "Little Susie Part 4". Both tracks appear here on CD for the first time ever. |
