Larry Clinton Multi Instrumentalist. Brooklyn born musician Larry Clinton 1909 1987 was a skilled arranger, highly original composer lyricist, competent multi instrumentalist and qualified bandleader. If not placed quite up there with Miller, Goodman and Dorsey, his band was nevertheless one of the most successful of the late 30s Swing Era, enjoying 38 record hits. He could certainly play both sweet and hot. And he was blessed with one of the very best band singers in Bea Wain voted by Billboard No.1 Female Band Vocalist of 1939. Living Era's My Reverie takes its title from Larry Clinton's hit, the biggest of no fewer than 18 included. Four were Number Ones, the other three being Deep Purple, Cry Baby Cry and Heart And Soul. Other Top Threes are Martha, You Go To My Head, True Confession and Summer Souvenirs. All these have in common the stylish vocals of Bea Wain the programme has 14 by her. Trombonist Ford Leary gives three lively vocals, and there's one from Dick Todd Change Partners. The Clinton band was noted for 'jazzing the classics' My Reverie comes from Debussy, and a further sampling is a lively In A Persian Market and for an imposing series of instrumental tone poems, Studies in Brown, Blue, Green, Red and Scarlet all five featured here, with such fine jazzers as Skeets Herfurt, Toots Mondello, Babe Russin and the great lead trumpeter Charlie Spivak.
