EDDIE CONDON

Description:
Volume 7 of the recordings of Eddie Condon presented in chronological order opens with a particularly successful studio date from June 1954. The extended tracks allow all musicians to solo at some length. This concept is reminiscent of Buck Clayton's jam sessions made for the same label at the time with players from the swing era. The swift "Changes Made", a merry romp of an old standard, is evidence the fun Condon and his men were having. The tracks recorded on two days in April 1955 were issued on an LP cunningly titled "Bixieland". Indeed, all the tunes are associated with Bix Beiderbecke who had recorded these almost 3 decades earlier. Bobby Hackett, then under exclusive contract to Capitol Records, sat in on the first date under the name of "Pete Pesci", yet only two bars from his cornet suffice to reveal to this disguise. Dick Carry's old sounding alto horn blends in nicely and gives the tracks a nostalgic, yet swinging touch. Hackett was replaced on the second date by Wild Bill Davison; the latter more robust and earthy but not quite as elegant as Hackett. All in all, this is truly happy music played by some of the best representatives of this style. To be continued...
