Spanish born Xavier Cugat, also known as “Cugie”, was a world renowned musician, artist, and bon vivant who is considered one of the pioneers of Latin American dance music. Many Americans got their first taste of Latin music through Cugat – his band was for 16 years the house band at New York’s Waldorf Astoria hotel.
