PLAYS CLARENCE WILLIAMS "ANY TIME"
This is the remarkable English pianist's eighth solo recording for Stomp Off Records. It goes without saying that he is a special talent. It is also a fact that Stomp Off has considerable interest and affection for the music of Clarence Williams. So the combining of Neville Dickie and Clarence Williams is indeed a bonanza for Stomp off and its collectors. Does it succeed? You bet it does, with Neville's powerful left hand supplying the tuba figures that characterized Clarence Williams' recordings and his right hand providing so many of those wonderful Williams melodies, several recorded here for the first time. On some tunes, Neville receives splendid support from banjoist Tom "Spats" Langham and Steve Nice on washboard which, along with the tuba, was a favorite rhythmic instrument for Clarence Williams. Neville again displays a unique ability to play in an orchestral style, so as to make successful solo piano recordings of material that was originally recorded by a multi instrument jazz band.
