On this trio disc, Smith is joined by notable drummer and teacher George Marsh a close colleague who performed with Smith innumerable times at San Jose's Garden City Club where Smith held forth as Musical Director for some 21 years, bringing in countless local and visiting legendary musicians and emergent talents. An advocate of drummer icon Jo Jones' perception of time laying accents with brushes and high hat always swinging, even in the freer music. On bass is Dan Robbins, who at the time of the recording summer of 1999 was Smith's mentee. Their versatility and shared musical dialects prove them to be kindred spirits with Smith. |
