DUKE ELLINGTON
COMPLETE PRESTIGE CARNEGIE HALL CONCERTS
Description:
This three disc edition captures Ellington's formidable 1946 1947 concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall. The whole of CD 1 and the first six tracks in CD 2 cover the January 1946 concert, an event which showcased the recent, important changes of personnel in the Ellinton organization. The sound of the new Duke orchestra was now anchored in a rhythm section which featured the return of versatile drummer Sonny Greer and the inclusion of bassist extraordinaire Oscar Pettiford. Highlights of the set include the ingenuous reworking of Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue, the premiere of the three part Tonal Group, a 19 minutes rendition of Black, Brown and Beige plus miniature surprises such as Joya Sherrill's splendid vocal version of The Blues and the exuberant cover of Solid Old Man. the last eight tracks in CD 2 and the whole of CD 3 cover Ellington's re appearance at Carnegie Hall on December, 1947, in what probably was one of Duke's most celebrated concerts at the time.
