DUKE ELLINGTON

FROM THE COTTON CLUB TO SWEDEN VOLUME 2

Description:
4 CD Set. The first JSP Duke Ellington volume traced Duke's recording career from 1926 until January 1929 JSP 924. This collection spans March 1929 to February 1940, an important period for jazz in general and Ellington in particular. In addition to the leader's skills as pianist composer and arranger, key sidemen, such as James 'Bubber' Miley, trombonist Joe 'Tricky Sam' Noanton, and saxophonists Johnny Hodges and Harry Carney, established themselves as jazz soloists. This set concentrates on the orchestra's performances, mainly instrumental, along with a handful of those featuring singer Ivie Anderson, and a few other vocalists.
