BERT FIRMAN
AND HIS ORCHESTRA
VOLUME TWO: SWING HIGH, SWING LOW
Description:
Includes the first British recording of 'Rhapsody In Blue'. London born violinist Herbert Feuerman 1906 1999 became, as Bert Firman, the youngest professional bandleader in the world and one of the most prolific recording artists of all British musicians he had made 750 sides by 1928, far outstripping his rivals. His band enjoyed seasons at the most prestigious West End locations, and was the most popular in the land during the Twenties. As a long overdue tribute to the longest lived of the great British bandleaders, Swing High, Swing Low shows just why the band had such a following. 17 of the tracks date from the band's heyday of 1926/8, most of it lively dance music that truly conveys the spirit of the period. Numbers such as Stampede, Sax Appeal and Sugar Foot Stomp are decidedly 'hot' and feature such fine instrumentalists as famous trombonist Ted Heath, trumpeter Frank Guarente and alto sax player Arthur Lally etc. Blue with American pianist and bandleader Carroll Gibbons as the brilliant, but anonymous, soloist. 73 years later, this exceedingly rare version now appears on CD for the first time. Firman's vintage period passed with the decade, but he did make some more fine recordings in 1937; four are included here featuring popular radio star Sam Costa Swing High, Swing Low etc.
