In this compilation of Judy Garland, the listener for the first time has the opportunity of sampling side by side her early optical soundtrack MGM recordings and her early Decca work. Decca recordings were confined to what would fit on a ten inch 78 rpm record, which usually meant tempos were faster on the commercial releases than as presented in the films. A quick comparison of Garland's signature tune "Over the Rainbow" from both MGM and Decca reveals quite a gap: the Decca version is too sugary compared to the much more deeply felt MGM treatment which opens this collection. |
