JACQUES GAUTHE / CLAUDE LUTER

CREOLE RICE JAZZ BAND

BECHET SUMMIT

Description:
The 100th anniversary of Sidney Bechet's birthday in 1997 gave Jacques Gauthe a good excuse to pay tribute to his idol. Gauthe and Claude Luter whose band often accompanied Bechet in the 1950s both double on clarinet and soprano Bechet's axes, and they team up in frequently exciting fashion throughout this enthusiastic set. Although Bob Wilber is listed as a sort of co leader, he is actually only on the first two selections, sticking to clarinet. However, Gauthe and Luter supply plenty of fireworks, with the assistance of pianist Steve Pistorius, rhythm guitarist Lars Edegran, bassist Tom Saunders and drummer Chris Tyle. Not all of the music was originally performed by Bechet including four Luter originals and Gauthe's "Centennial Blues", but the spirit of the great soprano saxophonist is felt throughout the date, particularly on such numbers as "Some of These Days," "Revolutionary Blues," "China Boy" and "When You and I Were Young, Maggie" which is heard in two versions. Soprano sax players unite for the Sidney Bechet Centennial 1897 1997 in New Orleans' French Quarter w. producer Richard Bird at the controls, feat. Lard Edegran gtr, Tom Saunders sbs, Steve Pistorius pno
