Second only to the Big Apple's Birdland as America's most famous haven for all that was modern in jazz, the shore front Lighthouse Cafe at Hermosa Beach was the hub of the L.A. scene throughout the 1950s. From 1949 until 1961, this Californian beach front niterie may have hosted everyone from Miles to the MJQ, Lee Morgan to Cannonball Adderley, The Jazz Messengers to The Jazz Crusaders but it is for its resident Light House Band that this venue is fondly remembered. Mainly comprised of former Stan Kenton soloists, The Lighthouse All Stars boasted such stars as Shorty Rogers, Maynard Ferguson, Shelly Manne, Jimmy Giuffre, Bud Shank, Bob Cooper, Frank Rosolino, Conte Candoli and many more. The whole shebang kicked off on Sunday May 29, 1949. On this Giant Steps release, it's Stan Getz plus Teddy Charles vibraphone who are in the spotlight and performing a repertoire comprised of such familiar blowin' fodder as 'I Only Have Eyes For You', 'Jive At Five', 'Moonlight In Vermont', 'Love Me Or Leave Me, 'So Long Broadway' and 'Topsy.' In doing so, it recaptures some of the magic that was unique to those nightly sessions at The Lighthouse back in the 1950s.
