CARROLL GIBBONS

AND THE SAVOY HOTEL ORPHEANS

VOLUME 9 - BUILD A LITTLE HOME

Description:
Carroll was a bandleader who directed from the keyboard, and whose innate sense of rhythm and subtle syncopation propelled the group, and infused the music with his own brand of elegance. Bearing in mind that the group would have been augmented for recording purposes as required, at the beginning of 1933 the Orpheans included Bill Shakespeare, Billy Higgs and Arthur Fenhoulet on trumpet, the last named doubling on trombone with brother Paul who also arranged and Sam Acres, George Melachrino on clarinet, alto sax and violin, Laurie Payne on clarinet, alto and baritone sax, George Smith on tenor sax, Ben Frankel on violin, Sid Bright on second piano, Harry Sherman on guitar, Jack Evetts on bass and Rudy Starita on percussion. It may seem strange that most of the songs in this compilation are sung by men, but Carrroll was not alone in confining himself to male vocalists; at this stage lady singers were often described somewhat disparingly as 'comediennes'. Maurice Elwin a pseudonym for Norman Macphail Blair takes the majority of the vocals; his influence was felt not only through his many recordings but also by virtue of the choice coaching lessons he gave to other singers and those aspiring to the theatre. Harry Bentley sings most of the remainder; he was a drummer turned signer who hailed from London's East End.
