2 CD Set. Includes previously unissued master takes of "Sing, Sing, Sing" and "Don't Be That Way". Boiling down Benny Goodman's voluminous output to two "essential" CDs and 40 songs is bound to cause disagreement among aficionados as to what his most important tracks were. Nevertheless, if you want just a couple CDs' worth of Goodman, this makes for about as good a representation of his most vital and accessible recordings as any. Wisely, most of the selections are from the 1930s and early 1940s, when Goodman did his most innovative swing jazz work and was working with his best musicians, though one recording is from as late as 1952. The set's also divided into four equal portions one each for "Benny's Big Band Arrangers," "Benny Visits Tin Pan Alley," "Benny's Small Groups," and "Benny Live" allowing listeners to experience/sample four different sides of his early work. Goodman accompanists who would become stars in their own right Lionel Hampton, Harry James, Gene Krupa, Charlie Christian, Peggy Lee, and Teddy Wilson are all heard at various points. Its value as an historically minded sampler/introduction aside, most of this is terrific swing music.
