Taken from the mid Fifties and away from the bright lights and the bluster of the big band, these recordings find Hampton at the peak of his powers, relaxed but inspired by the calibre of his collaborators, including piano maestros Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum, and Buddy Rich on drums. Hampton's trademark, which undoubtedly made him a star, may have been his furious energy, but his fellow musicians were known to be in awe of his capacity to interpret a ballad with an elegance and sensitivity that is abundantly evident here.
