Description:
American performers Billy Jones 1889 1940 and Ernest Hare 1883 1939 spread more than a little happiness throughout the Roaring Twenties with their light hearted comic songs. Tenor Jones and bass baritone Hare met in 1919 and teamed up for Brunswick. They became "The Happiness Boys" in 1923 when their radio programmes were sponsored by the Happiness Candy Stores, and no fewer than 44 of their records are listed as hits. "How Do You Do?" was the radio theme song of The Happiness Boys, and is the title of Living Era's debut CD for the duo. The 23 tracks include 14 major hits such as Barney Google, In The Little Red School House, I Miss My Swiss, Down Yonder, Hinky Dinky Parlay Voo and Don't Bring Lulu all top 5. And there's all 8:22 of their virtuoso recreation of 20s radio, Twisting The Dials from station to station. Their Does The Spearmint Lose Its Flavor On The Bedpost Overnight? provided Lonnie Donegan with a big hit in 1961. Also included is one of the decade's biggest hits, Yes We Have No Bananas, a solo for Billy Jones, together with Ernest Hare's solo answer I've Got The Yes We Have No Banana Blues. The Happiness Boys' brand of comedy might seem light years away from today's stand ups, but it still provokes a happy smile. |
