BULL MOOSE JACKSON

Description:
We [The Lucky Millinder Orchestra] were travelling by train then, and we got into Texas, and they used to put up chicken wire to keep the whiskey glasses away from the band. So at that time "Hurry Hurry" was very popular by Wynonie, and Trevor Bacon heard me humming around on something. So we had Panama Francis on drums – those was the ones that named meBullmoose. They say, “You look like a moose coming over the hill”. So that name has stuck, and has been very good to me all through these years. So then I got up and sang, and got a good hand, and stopped the riots…Bull Moose Jackson interviewed on The Johnny Otis Show, 1984. This, the second volume of Bull Moose Jackson’s complete recordings, contains half a dozen Billboard R&B chart hits, including "All My Love Belongs To You" 3, "I Can’t Go On Without You" 1 and "Love Me Tonight" 12 from 1948, and "Don’t Ask Me Why" 12 and 'Little Girl Don’t Cry" 2 from 1949. Spending eight weeks at the top of the charts, 'I Can’t Go On Without You" was, in fact, more successful than his earlier number one smash "I Love You, Yes I Do", but although the majority of hits during this period were ballads, there were a fair proportion of humorous jump recordings, too, yet Jackson’s R&B cover of Wayne Raney’s country chart topper "Why Don't You Haul Off And Love Me" 2 1949 was to be Bull Moose’s last R&B chart entry until he re recorded "I Love You, Yes I Do" for 7 Arts in 1961.
