ILLINOIS JACQUET

Description:
Volume five of the recordings of Illinois Jacquet presented in chronological order, opens with a session from late 1953. Jacquet's wonderful combo featured brother Russell and musicians who often worked together. The varied repertory included hot spots for the leader's sometimes exaggerated histrionics but also wonderful ballads with "Talk of the Town" standing out plus subdued mid tempo swingers. According to producer Norman Granz, the two extended tracks by Jacquet with Ben Webster allegedly happened by pure coincidence. This CD ends with the first half of a date made on the West Coast with locally active musicians, including the effervescent Harry Edison who was mainly working as a studio musician then.
