JOHN KIRBY

AND HIS SEXTET

COMPLETE ASSOCIATED TRANSCRIPTIONS, VOLUME 2

Description:
Here are 21 tunes for the transcription session of September 1941. The group heard here in its maturity was a long way from the group Kirby first put together on 52nd Street in April 1937. The 1941 session begins with Flamingo and includes "Bugler's Dilemma" and "Charlie's Prelude" that are Shavers' originals. By November 1943, the time of the next session, the war had broken up the old group. The times were changing but the Kirby formula was standing still. Kyle and Procope were in the service and Spencer was plagued with emotional problems and dying of TB. Without them the band relied on relatively straight treatments of standards.
