MANTOVANI

AND HIS ORCHESTRA

WALTZ ENCORES / AMERICAN WALTZES

Description:
It's sometimes forgotten nowadays, but Mantovani, the British conductor with the Italian name, was the first musician anywhere to sell a million stereo albums. And, remarkably, this feat was achieved in less than a year, in May 1959, not long after the stereo boom had begun in America, his biggest market place. Mantovani waltzes had been selling there in huge numbers since the success of Charmaine in late 1951, and, although he later diversified, these waltzes using a large string orchestra of many colours helped keep him at the forefront throughout the fifties. When in the spring of 1958 his recording company asked him to re jig a dozen of these hits in the new stereo format especially for the American consumer, Mantovani Waltz Encores was created. This million selling album constitutes the first half of a new Vocalion Two On One disc devoted to the waltz, the other half being American Waltzes, recorded in early 1962.
