MUSIC FROM SOME LIKE IT HOT / BLUE LOU / DIXIELAND SPECIAL

Description:
Born in Athens, GA, on July 22, 1917 he died on August 28, 1971, Lou McGarity was an American jazz trombonist, violinist and vocalist. He began playing violin when he was seven and switched to the trombone when he was 17. McGarity studied at the University of Georgia from 1934 36, gigged locally in the South with Kirk DeVore and Nye Mayhew, among others, and toured with Ben Bernie from 1938 40. He is best known for his participation in different Benny Goodman formations throughout the 1940s. Although he is present on multiple recording sessions, his career as a leader is limited to just five sessions. The first one, consisting of four tunes, took place in New York in 1955 and featured a septet including trumpeter Yank Lawson and clarinetist Peanuts Hucko. It was only issued as an EP titled Dixieland Special and is included in its entirety on the current CD as bonus tracks. His following dates as a leader took place in 1959 and consist of the two LPs contained on this CD. These were the first albums ever issued under McGarity's name. Five years would pass prior to McGarity's next dates as a leader. He recorded the album In Celebration in 1964 with a quintet that included Dick Hyman on piano. McGarity's final album as a leader, Lou McGarity Jazz Master, was recorded in Virginia on December 6, 1970, shortly before the trombonist's death.
