RED McKENZIE

VOLUME 1

Description:
CD begins with their first recording for Brunswick followed by their Vocalion recordings. In 1924 Red McKenzie a former jockey and bellhop formed an unusual novelty trio, the Mound City Blue Blowers, consisting of him playing a comb covered in tissue or wax paper, Dick Slevin on kazoo, and banjoist Jack Bland. Their first recording, "Arkansas Blues," was a major hit, which was a major surprise to everyone involved. The Mound City Blue Blowers recorded 20 numbers during 1924 1925 some on a different label as McKenzie's Candy Kids, adding guitarist Eddie Lang to the group by the seventh song. All of these formerly rare recordings are on this CD, along with two numbers from 1927 with Joe Humby on guitar instead of Lang. Although one can be justified in feeling that a little of this goes a long way, there are plenty of hot performances here, including "San" one of two selections that add Frankie Trumbauer on C melody sax, "Tiger Rag," "Panama," and "Hot Honey." It is good to have all of this material gathered in one place at last the packaging is perfect, and the novelty music is certainly fun.
