Description:
The Glenn Miller Story, takes us through the last year of Glenn Miller's civilian band September 1941 to September 1942 and beyond. The big hits continue unabated 'A String of Pearls', 'American Patrol'; to say nothing of 'I've Got A Gal In Kalamazoo' and 'At Last' from the band's second Hollywood film 'Orchestra Wives'. Disc 4 contains the actual live broadcast of 'Juke Box Saturday Night' after which Glenn Miller introduces Harry James to the audience and announces that James will be taking over the Chesterfield radio programme the following Tuesday. Three days later the civilian band was disbanded as Glenn Miller had enlisted into the Army. Nearly ten months later Captain Glenn Miller & The Band of the AAF Training Command later the 418th AAF Band can be heard in all their glory. Miller had at his disposal a special 'pool' of the best musicians and was able, in Geoffrey Butcher's words, to "...blend together the apparently disparate elements of the Goodman/Miller dance band style, the Kostelanetz/David Rose light orchestra and the Basie beat into brilliant and memorable popular music". And how! The results speak for themselves. |
