GLENN MILLER

AND HIS ORCHESTRA WITH THE ANDREWS SISTERS

CHESTERFIELD RADIO SHOWS

Description:
From 1939 42 he made a string of memorable hits that helped to provide beleaguered wartime audiences with the romance and escapism they craved, before joining the US forces to form his Army Air Force Band, and traveling to the UK in 1943 to entertain the forces and populace with concerts and radio broadcasts. His disappearance on a flight to Paris on December 15th 1944 cemented his place in legend. From 1938 to the time he disbanded the orchestra in 1942 to join the war effort, Miller's Orchestra had a 3 times a week radio show on CBS sponsored by Chesterfield cigarettes, which brought him to a wide audience and helped establish and maintain the orchestra’s huge popularity. This 3 CD set comprises recordings from those shows, including performances by guest stars such as The Andrews Sisters and resident singers Ray Eberle and Tex Beneke, as well as the unmistakable swing arrangements for the Orchestra. The recordings include many of Glenn's spoken introductions, as well as the promos for Chesterfield, which create and emphasize the period flavour of the shows from the days when smoking was the norm and stars were happy to embrace the cool brands. This is a must for Miller aficionados, who may have his popular studio recordings, but may not have these less familiar tracks, including broadcast versions of tunes Miller never recorded elsewhere.
